Tottenham’s Luka Modrić is the Premier League’s best midfielder

Sharethematch.com takes a look at recent statistics released which highlight Luka Modrić's value to Tottenham Hotspur

Modrić tops the midfielder charts
Finally we have confirmation from Opta that Luka Modrić is the best player in his position in the Premier League.
Opta have released various different statistics that encompass the whole season but the three that are most relevant in this case are chances created, passes and crossing accuracy.
In terms of chances created, Manchester City’s David Silva (104) tops the pile while Chelsea winger Juan Mata (102) is second and Modrić completes the top three with 96 – Nani, who got the most assists last season, is down in tenth.
Moving on to passes, it’s little surprise there are four Swansea players in the top ten with Ashley Williams leading the way with 2594 but in second is Modrić with 2534.
There is no sign of Silva or Mata however and, in fact, Modrić is the only one of the top ten chance creators to feature in the passes column.
On to crossing accuracy and Norwich City’s David Fox is top with 41.3 per cent but who is the only player to feature in this list that appears in either of the other two, let alone both?
That’s right, Modrić slips in at fourth – so expect him to light up the European championship this summer.

Interesting article that highlights Luca's worth to our team, although it only highlights some of the attributes required of a midfielder.
Unfortunately i cannot find the opto tables to back up this article and also to look at other stats such as tackling, interceptions, dribbles and shooting to see where he comes in those aspects.
But it does show how much he adds to our team (even when he looks physically and mentally exhausted), and why talk of moving him on, in my humble opinion, seems misguided, deluded and unfathomable.

Come on Bayern, COYS !!!!

p.s. Mods, i think this deserves a separate thread, but if you feel this need to be merged into a Modric thread then please move.

Whilst his passing has been good I felt this season he didn't have the killer ball and only showed it on a few occasions like bolton away, whereas VDV has shown this season he could produce a killer ball

Also the thing that Modric so great was his defensive play and this season that took a dip last season he was our little thug that no one suspected whereas this season he defensive performance has dipped imo

Not always convinced by the use of stats to justify player performance, but despite some of the opinion on this site, I think we need Luka.

He's developed into a world class player, people knock elements of his game but on form he's right up there.

IMO we need to force him to stay (if indeed he wants out) make some key improvements to the squad and push on next year. We should only be looking to sell once we have identified/purchased an absolute gem of a replacement.

anyone who thinks we should sell this guy is bananas, oh & like i said yesterday, i was dumb founded at the amount of people who were saying "he didnt look like he wanted to be here" or "went missing in games this season"....oh & the best was "he needs to be dropped"

fuck me

the guy just had statistically his best ever season for us, oh & hes also stats wise the best midfielder in the prem...which is statistically the best league in the world right???

yeah lets drop him & then sell him the rat!

Oops - sorry Adiepf - looked at thread titles but didn't look within threads......
But i totally agree - he is the heartbeat and brains of our team and people are too quick to criticise him because he is not a glory player, or a player who is in your face on the pitch or in the press.
Luca plays for the team and i really hope it is our team he is playing for next season.

??

a created chance is a created chance, i dont get your argument?

he has put a man through on goal 96 times!!....the 3rd highest behind silva & mata...

he has completed 2534 passes dwarfing both, he has the 4th highest crosses dwarfing both...

he is statistically the best "all round" midfielder in the premiership????...its in black & white, what do you want from him?

Love him and want to keep him, but not if he wants to go. He owes us nothing now.
Even when he has an off day he's better than any of our other players excluding van der vaart when he has one of his stormers at the same time.
As somebody once said it's not the good players that are the problem.

I think Yaya Toure would have a thing to say about this. I really don't think the stats can start to measure who is the best midfielder in the Premiership.

Modric is irreplaceable in my opinion and I like stats to compare things, but I think you need to judge a cm based on certain things wether they are defensive attacking or what ever... a player in cm isnt likely to cross the ball much but they are likely to pass and create and tackle as well as score... its easy to use stats to justify anything you want!

You don't know what you've got till it's gone and this will be apparent when Modric eventually leaves.

i disagree...how do we rate midfielders then?...on their hair or the way they tie their laces?

opta do this for a living, they are the best at what they do & i trust that Modric is top of there list for a reason....also ALL the prem clubs use opta stats & pro zone...hence the reason Chelsea, Man City & Man utd would have him in a heartbeat & hence the reason £40M was on the table...

they have every single stat possible available to them, hundreds more than us & thats why they want him....they know hes the best out there

They have highlighted 3 stats in this article but say Opta have used many to determine who is the best midfielder. Modric is a great midfielder, but the reasons why he is good aren't even highlighted by the stats there. He is great at ghosting past a player, he is great at finding a yard of space off the ball, he is just about the best around at making a pass in a tight area but a stat isn't going to tell you that. Are there stats for how many times he has found an extra yard of space or number of passes completed when under pressure? There are four Swansea players in the top ten passers, does that make them four of the top passers in the Premiership or is it a function of how the team plays? How about defensive contribution and I'm not talking about number of tackles or number of clearances? There are things that happen on a pitch that I wouldn't think they have stats for, are they even taken into consideration in determining who the best midfielder is? What about how effectively they close down, how they read the play, off the ball movement, positions they receive the ball in. Stats are interesting, but we rate midfielders are far more than stats, there are simply too many intangibles to consider.

If the stats prove that Modric is the best midfielder in the Premiership, can they prove that Toure is more influential?

personally i think it's possible to think yaya toure is the best midfielder in the premier league without it meaning modric is shit.

i agree with what you are saying, but they are saying that of ALL midifielders in the prem Modric scores highly in more than anyone else....

i understand your point but the fact he does all the things you say as well as the things that are highlighted just endorses it for me...

hes the best, he plays for us, we should embrace it (y)
