I can't say I've seen that much to convince me that this guy is worth anything like these numbers but if he can repeat last season then it's better than what we have.

I've heard people, quite rightly, talk about makeweights (Dempsey wouldbe great) but the way to eliminate a large amount of the risk in this is to ensure that the guaranteed element of the fee is relatively low (for us) but that the variable is realistic (for Villa) if he is as good as they think.
£15m + 1m for every 30 league appearances up to 210 = 22m max for example

Of the guaranteed 15, even better if we could make that 10 + Dempsey or similar

I agree with the first bit mr p. but would add one difference on the second paragraph; Benteke has put a request in. This is incredibly rare. It saves villa quite a few bob and makes his position pretty untenable. Not completely irreversible but pretty difficult. Imagine how the fans will be ?

I personally haven't been that sold on Benteke, like a lot of people around here. He certainly does have a lot of attributes that would work for us, however if we bought him I'd still want to see a real quality ball playing, creative wide forward come in as well.

If we started the season with Bale and Lennon either side of Benteke, I don't think we'd be getting the best from what a player like this offers. We'd need someone capable of scoring goals to replace Lennon, who can pick up the ball and offer themselves when Benteke gets it under control.

So, "yes" to Benteke as long as we get a Bernard/Jovetic/Lamela/Willian/Hulk(?)/Son type to play alongside him and Bale.

Where we get the money, I don't know! (part of the reason I'm unsure of Benteke in the first place).

I don't think anyone disagrees with you on the point that we need another wide forward if we are going to a 433.

Lennon is not creative...PERIOD. With a three of SanDemPaul we will need someone at the top that can create. The players you mention are all spendy. So...who? IDK!

25m is a big risk for a one-season wonder. He does have a little of the Michael Ricketts about him but his stats from last season were exceptional. If DL has seen Moneyball, he'd sign him on that basis alone.

The depressing thing is I can see this carrying on until the last week of August. I don't blame Levy as there aren't many other striking options who will obviously improve us. But we will be starting the season with Defoe and Ade and will sell one of them the last week as Benteke signs for 19 million
