Yes, they could attract Osvaldo, but that was partly because of Pochettino's Espanyol and Argentine connection, partly because he's seriously damaged goods and quite a few clubs wouldn't have been prepared to take a chance.

We would not be able to attract a player of Modric's stature now. He wasn't quite 20 when we signed him, remember, a very promising kid who might not have made it (quite a few people said he was too lightweight). Berbatov, although older, wasn't considered true top class, otherwise United would have signed him in 2006 instead of waiting to see how he got on with us. He lasted two seasons, Modric four. I think we're at slightly cross purposes here, though in general agreement.

Debt has nothing to do with it. Liverpool's turnover is £60m up on ours, so they can spend £40m more on wages for the same percentage of turnover.

:) Yeah I think we are, was never claiming that they were at the top level when we signed them, just we managed to get them when our stock was not as high as it is now in world football. For me they were at the same level as what Blind would be now or maybe a little higher rated. Your examples of Erickson and Vertonghen were basically the same as mine with Berbatov and Modric, players with a lot of potential who could go on to be very, very good players

Now Liverpool I wasn't trying to diminish them, just saying that they signed two very good young players when their stock was a little lower, so why are our own fan so dismissive of us? You have said that they are richer and have more prestige but recent transfer battles have proved we can compete with them. I know Siggy and Dempsey may not have worked out as we would have hoped but if proves we can beat them to players. Yeah champions league may have swung it a little back in there favour, but I don't think enough so they could blow us out of the water for any signing.

Osvaldo we will have to agree to disagree

Will quickly sum up. Not saying we are one of the worlds elite who could go out and sign the very best players, but we are well established in the group below, and I believe the majority of the worlds players would be interested to hear what we would have to say if we put in bids for them

I'm aware that's where he plays for Ajax and that it's his best position. However with all the options available for a club like United to buy do you really see them making Blind their anchor? Good left backs are hard to find, CM's not so much. After being linked with Strootman, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Pogba, Vidal, Gundogan et al, it'd be seriously underwhelming for them to end up with Blind in midfield.

Afterall, if LVG really believed he was that good a cm he'd be playing him there for Holland. If he goes for him it will be as a left back, but I don't believe that will happen due to the imminent signing of Shaw.

Can see him making the move for Strootman in the January transfer window

I still think he'll chase him in this window actually. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Roma include Paulinho and Dembele in their replacement option list.

I thought Strootman was ruled out for the next few months?

He is, but it doesn't mean LvG can't pursue him. I think he'll also bring in an immediate option, but I think he'll have the resources and clout to demand they back him getting Strootman.

Chavs,plus hes a chav fan

Suggestions in the press today they are after Schennikov of CSKA. Who knows, I can't see United putting in a big offer for Shaw without Van Gaal being aware of it and he would be fully aware of what Blind can offer, however if United and Chavs do have other targets I still don't see Shaw staying at Soton

They've already made the bid

If you are talking Man U then that was my point, why would LVG ok United bidding for Shaw if he wanted Blind at LB?
I can understand them possibly turning to Blind if they weren't prepared to offer more as even with a good WC his price will be nowhere near what Soton will want for Shaw

OK...I don't know that much about him except what I saw last night and heard in discussions after the match.

In Jimbo's Guardian World Cup daily podcast they had a Dutch journalist who mentioned that he is pretty slow and that was not an issue last night because of Spain's lack of pace on the wings.

Of course, he may be wrong but it might be interesting to compare his performance against a different style of attack.

I'd like to see how he deals with pace but his positioning seemed pretty sound. He pushed players down the route he wanted most of the time. I like him and think we'll see a bid go in.

He's not a great LB. He worked well in the Spain game, because of the tactical specifics of that match. His future is in midfield IMO.

Zokora wasn't bought on the back of a good international tournament...

My joke was about Blind. Thanks for having me explain that though (y)

I'd have thought the thread title and reference to Blind in the comment I replied to would make that obvious :shifty:

Ha I actualy did get, and enjoyed, your joke, I just fucked up with my quoting. I should have been quoting the Otter King post that you'd quoted, but quoted you straigt up instead.

As I recall, quite a lot of people were raving about Diddy-A's World Cup performances on here, especially the bloke who had actually been watching Essien.
