lol. So you'd tell Dier to stand behind their best header of the ball whilst a cross comes in?
Er, surely you try to stop the ball getting to the head of the attacker, especially one as dangerous in the air as Carroll. Standing behind, or next to him would be totally pointless.
I don't see any problems with Dier's positioning at all, the problem is with the referee and these new, stupid rules.

I didn’t notice Dier stopping the ball getting to him though.
Standing in front wasn’t too successful really.

Well the fact that Carroll was standing behind Dier amd Carroll got the ball seems to indicate that Dier being in front of him was pretty pointless really
There aren't many players that can beat Carroll to a header but by standing in front, at least your giving yourself a chance. At the very least, you're putting him off by getting in the way.
Standing behind him, you're doing nothing but taking yourself out of the game.

Have you ever heard of the term 'goal side.' It's page 1 of the how to defend manual. Dier didn't win the ball because he isn't as tall as Carroll and Carroll had the leverage when jumping. Standing behind him would leave him zero chance of winning it or even interfering in Carrolls ability to head it.

You mark a player and it’s ad is le that you stand behind or beside them. You need to see what they are doing

I'm getting the sense from your last few posts that you've never played football in your life. The stuff you're claiming he's wrong for doing are all things that get drilled into you when you're 7 years old playing for the primary school team ffs

Question, is Sanchez more effective in dealing with free kicks into the area than Dier? I think so.
Who was he marking?
The original point was that Dier didn't do anything wrong. If Sanchez was marking Carroll (goal side as he should be) and was pushed in the back, the ball would've still likely hit his arm. The only person at fault here is the imbecile who came up with the new handball rule and the tosser in black who felt the need to enforce it to the letter. I suspect neither have ever played any football.

All you say is right and logically there is no way Dier would outjump Carroll in a normal defensive set up.
However it is mush easier to jump higher when you can have a bit of a run up.Dier not only had Carroll behind him but Lascalles as well. His jump was from a standing position.Carroll had that bit of space to run/jump.That gave him an advantage.

So are you saying we should have had a higher defensive line then? which means the whole team and not just Dier who you are singling out.

Attempting to do something to the best of your ability =/= 100% success rate

Jumping like a salmon (arms by sides) while behind the attacker = 0% success rate

Think with more games at CB he can be pretty decent but would rather a Skrinjar level of quality player came in and was first choice and Sanchez is 2nd choice.

But he was perfectly fine vs Newcastle.

I find out hilarious that so many of you have a hate boner for Dier yet he’s going to start pretty much every match he fit for, even if we do sign another centre back.

A boner is a boner though, no matter how you get it, it’s nice to have one (y)

Dier would have had a much better chance of getting to that ball if Lascelles hadn't pushed him in the back. It was that push that led to Dier's arms flailing around (and the penalty by default) as he's trying to re-balance. All round shit refereeing and VAR analysis by people who've never played and don't understand such things.

Edit; I'd also add Roy Keane said he didn't know why Dier was waving his arms about. It's because he was pushed in the back you fucking halfwit!

Aurier, lucas, Dele, davies also start/started more or less every game, but that doesn't mean people can't critique their performance.
