Recruiting has been a huge problem in recent years, all the players bought to succeed our big names of recent times have been terrible. Sanchez, Foyth & Rodon were all brought in to be long-term players and none of them have even come close to replacing Toby or Jan. Then there's Aurier, Sissoko, Lo Celso, Ndombele, Reguilon, Doherty, Sessegnon. None of them have proven adequate to replace the likes of Dembele, Eriksen, Trippier, Walker or Rose.

Something which gave me serious pause when it came to wanting Poch back is that a lot of those players are ones that came in post-Mitchell, when he was supposedly more hands-on with transfers.

when you are looking at transfers you have to some things in place one is that you don't sell your best players to rivals if you want to compete - we have then had 3 years maybe slightly longer when there has been little direction (save for the end of last season) you need to have a settled formation and look to build by buying better players than what you have maybe intermingled with some youngsters who have potential - you don't it like last summer in trying to bloat out the first team squad with seven players who don't improve you at all

at Tottenham we had an obsession in trying to replace Dembele who had a pretty unique skillset and then tried to mould every young player into the same type of player which shock horror didn't work - then amongst the chaos of the last 3 years with little or no long strategy it becomes almost impossible to bring in developing players because we aren't trying to do that .

We spend silly money on players with little idea what we are doing and then try to mould them into something they are not and wonder why it won't work - there should be no talk about transfers until a new manager is in place and one who knows what formation we are going to play and what style of football we are going to play and there should only be one answer to the second part aggressive front foot football otherwise forget it.

The one chance we have at the moment in the transfer market is that there are some very obvious wins by replacing players who aren't good enough and that given where we are shouldn't be that difficult

the issue with him (and many others within the team/squad) is that they can look ok when the team is playing well but when the team isn't performing and needs leaders/better players to step up, he's the complete opposite i.e. all of his weaknesses/faults are glaringly obvious and regularly exposed. this is a common issue of having too many average players in the side, the downside is huge as opposed to almost no upside.

Tells you all you need to know when Neil Warnock (and I quote) “wouldn’t have any of the back four that played for Spurs on Sunday over his Huddersfield back four”

And they’re fighting relegation from the Championship.

Our defence is pathetic - only Romero can actually defend and he’s been ropey as fuck recently.

As for Dier, he’s the most one paced, passive defender I’ve ever seen. He doesn’t sense danger, positions himself poorly and has started just standing off and backing away from attackers allowing them the freedom of the 18 yard box.

He would definitely be one of the first out of the door for me. Nice lad but sentiment aside he’s simply not good enough to start games for us.

I’d make an exception for Eric

Assuming you’re talking about him in this thread

Really wouldn’t have a problem with Eric getting a new contract. I love him.

As long as the contract states he’s only a squad option and no longer a starter. Whilst we keep accepting mediocrity we’re going nowhere.

I think the only reason to keep him is literally cos we've already got 2-3 worse CBs than him in Tanganga, Sanchez and (probably) Rodon.

Dier's rubbish but if our new manager plays a back 3 we simply need bodies at the back. Not sure we can afford to bomb out 4 CBs all at once, so might be worth keeping Dier as a backup until we've sold and adequately replaced the even worse defenders we've got. Does that warrant a new contact, though? Probably not. Letting him go on a free in 2024 makes more sense unless he's really cheap and willing to be 4th/5th choice.

The fact he's not even homegrown really doesn't help his cause, either.

I’m just watching the Wolves v Palace game, Kilman is a guy we should be seriously interested in coming in, replacing someone like Dier. Tomori at Milan too.

I was also impressed with Dunk the other week, leadership and strength, but I’ve never paid much attention to him before so don’t have much to go on.

There is something that all managers during Dier’s time here have seen in him. He has played most games every season he has been here. He is on the player committee. I remember earlier in the season there was talk about him being a starter for England again - he was playing well. He and the rest of the team have fallen off, but it’s always defenders who get the flack as they are the final link in the chain. See Royal, Sánchez, Romero over past few months. Their confidence looks destroyed. Could see new players next season - it’s important not to be hasty.

For me - he’s absolutely one of the players I’d keep around.

You need some stability, some leadership from older players.

Should he be first choice? Well hopefully we sign somebody better, but in the current squad - 100% he’s a starter.

I think his in game decision making (those stupid little balls in to Son, ffs!) is pretty bad and hasn’t got any better. So bad under pressure.

Sorry, but for me he has to go. I liked the idea of him sticking around as a squad option but nah, he needs to go. I only want Davies and Romero for next season from the current squad. In fact I would rather keep Sanchez around over Eric now.

No fucking way does he deserve a new deal. he should be sold asap. I'm sure he's a lovely lad but he's not a top 6 player, not even close.
