We were told Kelly was available though, and wanted to come and it wasn't a big price and levy said no once again. If we had Kelly at least he suits the high line and would mitigate the loss of VDV somewhat.

The excuses I’m hearing are laughable.
How long have we been in this mess for 🤦🏼

2 seasons late.
His improving was one of the reasons we got top four in 2022. And hang on, is it two, four or six years since he’s needed replacing, because I’ve seen all of these stated over recent pages. If it’s all of them then fuckin hell, how do you all have the energy still? Really the attitude toward him now seems to be a race to who can disparage and belittle a nice bloke the most. It just seems so pointlessly cruel to a player who’s really not done anything to warrant it apart from making mistakes, yet we seem desperate to rewrite history and pretend someone who’s made 49 appearances for England and appeared in 40+ games during each of our best seasons has always been shite.

The lack of pace is a big concern for me with him playing the high line, but more so than that is when it’s coupled with just how poor his defensive reactions are, it’s then verging into “we can’t start him” territory.

His defending for the second goal was awful. He could see the pass being played and Lemina running past in front of him. In the 97th minute you absolutely have to track that run, even if you go early and guarantee Lemina is onside, it wouldn’t have mattered as he then would be able to block the shot or jockeyed the ball out of play/clear it for a throw. The fact he saw the danger and decided it was best to try and catch Lemina offside, when he knew there was a good chance he wouldn’t be, was laughable.

This has been a common issue, passive play and not reading danger. You could overlook those deficiencies if he had blistering pace that could get him back into a decent position, but he doesn’t. It’s honestly a real worry if he plays the next 2 games before Romero is back.

He clearly is a very nice guy, he doesn’t deserve any personal abuse from fans. Saying that, just because he is a nice guy won’t magically make him a good fit for this system unfortunately.

One crap pass aside, I thought he was pretty solid today.
Sorry but I disagree. His one on one defending is terrible. He just backs off waiting for the attacker to shoot. He did it with Rashford last season and twice yesterday against Danjuma. We were lucky that Vicario made an incredible save with the first one and Danjuma put the other over the bar. He simply cannot play in a high line.

Yup, constantly back-peddling. Just because he didn’t boot the ball in his own net doesn’t mean he was “solid”. Hopefully with VDV retuning and fingers crossed a new centre back arriving next month Eric and us can be spared anymore minutes and he can leave in the summer with a warm goodbye rather than any major sourness.

Two one v one duels, no goals conceded. That‘s good defending.

He is probably past his best but with our injuries and lack of centre halves Ange has only got him .
Hopefully we’ll bring in another centre half in January and VDV will be fully fit

I thought he did well with the aerial bombardment, helped to organise the back line and showed great character to step in when he's clearly not in the manager's long term plans.

Good to get a verse or two of "I love Eric Dier" from the South stand also.

He’s not gonna go anywhere, despite what west ham and spurs may agree, as I think he’s 6 months away from being a free agent and going wherever he wants with whatever signing on fee
