It's quite common to change the way you speak including sentence structure to help those understand where English isn't their first language.

I imagine with dier's background and speaking Portuguese is why he'd understand this.
Yeah but putting on an accent is not going to help with that. We'll have to see if he gets to Steve's levels of pretending English isn't his first language.

The accent does help though. It's talking in a similar tone to the locals which makes it easier for them to grasp the language. I think a multilingual speaking player like Dier knows what he's doing.

So if I go to Newcastle or Scotland I should put on a Scottish or geordie accent so they can understand me better.

No because they're English speaking so they're used to the accents already. Germany is not so although a lot of them speak English they speak it in a different way to us. So if you speak in that way it's more like you're a German speaking English.

The guy doing the interview speaks fluent English so attempting to mimick a German accent isn't going to help him understand you any better. If anything it will make it worse if he doesn't understand the accent you are attempting to mimick.

He speaks English in a German accent is the point. I just think Dier knows better to be honest. I don't know it all just sounds a bit ignorant regards to foreign language.

It's not his first language is it? He's Portuguese.

Eric Dier wasn't speaking English with either a German accent or an English accent so how was this helpful. The interviewer was probably more familiar with an English accent than the accent Dier was attempting. Pretty sure the interviewer has heard Kane speak multiple times since last summer.

No. If you go to Scotland, Newcastle or any foreign country you should just talk very loudly and slowly. They should then pick up your accent and speak in a way that is acceptable to you. If they can't do it you are then supposed to swear a lot and stomp off in a huff. Those are the most basic rules of English tourism.

Like I say I'm sure he know what he's doing, he speaks multiple languages. He was well known for helping foreign players adapt when they arrived. So I'll take his way of speaking with respect. It just seems a bit silly people mocking a player who speaks several languages.

For me, the accent was not interesting - but some of the the phrasings he used were more "German-speaking-English" than native English speaker.

But, as noted above - as someone who can speak multiple languages, it's probably easy for Dier to pick up on accents, phrasings and rhythms of speech.

So how long are we going to get daily updates on Dier, how he’s performing, whether he was signed because he’s football friends with Kane or if his accent has changed (it has not)?

I’m not annoyed, I’m more intrigued. Because it seemed like everyone was so excited to see him go.

They don't do an interview and broadcast it for the benefit of...the interviewer 🤷🏼‍♂️

Beggars belief at this point that people don't want to believe that this is a normal thing to affect.

It is his first language he was born in Cheltenham and lived there till he was like 6-7 yo.
He grew up in Horsham, but I can only presume those back in Cheltenham then took the piss out of him affecting a Brighton accent.
