So, anyone keeping up to date on this?
a little, there are still some qualifiers going in with more tonight and then the draw for us is on the 2nd August but we won't know who we get until 12th august when the 3rd round is all done.

Thanks guys.

I'd really like us to take this seriously. It's a great way to give some younger players experience and in my opinion we should be looking to win it.

Success breeds success!!!

yeah agreed. We have such a large squad and a lot of really talented youngsters as well who can play in this and mix it up with the senior players. I had a look through the teams who are qualifying and there are some really random ones but also a few like Feyenoord, BATE, Gent, Basil, AEK who are all fairly decent europa teams

First real upsets of the season today. Vorskla Poltava (Ukraine) wouldn't have fancied their chances of making the group anyway, but unexpectedly went out to Kuopion Palloseura (Finland). Steaua Bucharest (Romania) would have fancied their chances, but were eliminated by Shakhter Karagandy (Kazakhstan). European veterans BATE Borisov (Belarus) topped off their disappointing failure to win the league by going out to Dinamo Batumi (Georgia).

There was a really big upset closer to home, as Larne (Northern Ireland) sensationally knocked out Aarhus (Denmark). But the biggest of the night would have to be AEK Athens (Greece) being sent home on penalties by Velež Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Shoutouts as well to Drita (Kosovo), who battled to the end but went down 3-2 to Feyenoord (Netherlands), and to TNS (Wales), who would've expected a close tie against Kauno Žalgiris (Lithuania) but ran out 10-1 winners on aggregate!

Third Qualifying Round ties involving British/Irish teams or that otherwise look interesting:

Linfield (Northern Ireland) vs Fola Esch (Luxembourg)
Shamrock Rovers (Ireland) vs Teuta (Albania)
Paços de Ferreira (Portugal) vs Larne (Northern Ireland)
Luzern (Switzerland) vs Feyenoord (Netherlands)
Hibernian (Scotland) vs Rijeka (Croatia)
Breiðablik (Iceland) vs Aberdeen (Scotland)
Trabzonspor (Turkey) vs Molde (Norway)
Bohemians (Ireland) vs PAOK (Greece)
TNS (Wales) vs Viktoria Plzen (Czech Republic)
Vitesse (Netherlands) vs Dundalk (Ireland)

The Europa League also starts next week, with the losers of the ties involving these British teams dropping down into the Conference League playoff:

Lincoln Red Imps (Gibraltar) vs Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia)
Jablonec (Czech Republic) vs Celtic (Scotland)
Galatasaray (Turkey) vs St Johnstone (Scotland)

Nice round up, thank you

Also could you imagine the Celtic fans if they drop out of the champs league and then drop out of the europa. That would be an awful start to a season for them.

Did any British or Irish teams get knocked out?

Like the idea of playing a random Irish / British team, could be a good way day and want them to do well anyway

All those who played the last round went through apart from Celtic who dropped from CL to EL and will drop to ECL if they lose the EL tie.

Yes, but back in the first qualifying round rather than last night. Coleraine went out to Velež Mostar, as did Sligo Rovers to Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar, St Joseph's to Levadia and the aptly named Europa F.C. from Gibraltar to Kauno Žalgiris. There were then two occasions of British/Irish team's facing each other - Bala Town lost to Larne and Glentoran lost to TNS.

I really hope we get Hibs, already been told by a hibs season ticket he would get me a ticket in their end if I can't get one in the spurs end!

That really opens up the competition. Great news!

Tough tie on paper for them against Rijeka, but the Croats aren't looking great at the moment so they do have a chance

In terms of our playoff draw, we can't get Celtic, Bohemians or The New Saints, because they'd all be in the seeded section - the draw takes place before Q3 is played so the coefficient of the better team is used. We also can't get the Lincoln Red Imps, Linfield or Shamrock Rovers because they're in a separate protected section for teams that won their domestic leagues. However, we could get Larne, Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundalk or St Johnstone. By a long distance the toughest draw though would be a trip to Germany to face Union Berlin, a side who'll really hope to compete in the latter stages if they can avoid ourselves, Roma and Stade Rennais in the Playoff.

UEFA have now released the 'groups' for the Conference League Playoff draw. This means we now have a list of the 8 teams we could face, as we'll be drawn against an unseeded side from our own grouping. Those are:

Winners of CSKA Sofia (Bulgaria) vs Osijek (Croatia)
Winners of Paços de Ferreira (Portugal) vs Larne (Northern Ireland)
Winners of Breiðablik (Iceland) vs Aberdeen (Scotland)
Winners of FK Čukarički (Serbia) vs Hammarby (Sweden)

Note that there are no away fans permitted at any qualifying or playoff matches this season - so don't start booking the trains to Aberdeen or the Ryanair to Larne after the draw! The draw is 1pm on Monday, we'll find out the winners of the relevant tie on the 12th of August, and then our first leg will be on the 19th with the second leg on the 26th.

Full draw groups below:

An interesting thread on the financial distribution for the Conference League and other UEFA competitions, for any fellow data nerds. But the summary is that we need to get back into the Champions League ASAP - the difference is vast. If we won the whole Europa Conference League, we'd get €21M from UEFA for the season including prize money, TV money, participation money, and historic coefficient money. If Chelsea turn up in the Champions League and get battered every game, going out with 0 points, they're still guaranteed at least €55.75M - and the other English clubs even more.

Other figures for comparison: Man City, if they won the Champions League, would get €133m. Leicester, if they won the Europa League would get €44m (it's better to be in the Champions League than win the Europa). West Ham, if they came 3rd in the Europa League group stage with 2 points, dropped into the Conference League and won it, would get €29.4M (it's better to drop down into a tournament than win it from the start).

This comp’s starting to seem like the old Cup Winners’ Cup. It could actually be fun if we go for it.
