Yeah but Qatar wasn't up against and the fact japan and korea were allowed to bid, with them hosting it eight years ago is a joke

the fact more people voted for them over Australia shows that something dodgy is going on

Not really.

Japan, South Korea, Australia and England regularly have large sporting events in their countries.

People whinged and whined and took every shot they could at South Africa saying their crime levels and corruption made them a ridiculous choice to host a world cup. They stepped up to the plate superbly and the tournament helped them to improve their infrastructure.

Russia have progressed massively in the last decade and still have issues similar to South Africa. Hosting the world cup could bring them closer to Europe and give them an opportunity to improve their reputation.

Our bid was strong and what we had to offer was presented very well but it's clear that it's a WORLD cup and other nations need this exposure to help their nations more than us.

We've got the olympics now stop whining.

True but the world cup has never been given to a country so close other than mexico and that was because it was given to colombia but they withdrew four years before they were due to host cause of financial reasons

And the the problems with qatar are different to russia and south africa. The report showed the weather would be harmful to fans, so you air condition the stadium but you air condition the country unless they want to turn it in to a snow dome

I can tell you that most of the non-Arab football fans who live in Qatar think it's an absolute joke (or disgrace, depending who you ask) that Qatar was awarded 2022.
There's 100% conviction that the "vote" was bought.

So?

Having a world cup in a place that pushes the country into development and progression is surely a good thing.

We lost the bid, grow some balls, act with a little grace and understand we don't rule the world.

Everytime we don't get our own way isn't an indication of mass corruption.

The development and progression argument is fine in Russia, but Qatar is one of the richest countries on earth, they don't need help and that city will be built anyway. It is however imo a ludicrously inappropriate place to hold a world cup

The common factor between Russia and Qatar is that they both need stadiums built. I wouldn't be surprised if there were something dodgy in the procurement process.

Russia has no free press to speak of (Putin took care of that) and I wonder whether Qatar does.

Loads of new stadiums, no questions asked.

Doubles all round!

I imagine there will be high dollar tax free employment on offer to skilled workers in Qatar over the next few years. Anyone fancy it?

What's the point in building stadiums if you're never going to have big events there?

Most people thought South Africa was a ludicrous place to hold a world cup but that turned out all right.

Qatar might be a rich country but it is still removed from the global society and a world cup could help progress their country is ways other than financial.

To be fair, when I was in Port Elizabeth for the World Cup and speaking with the locals, they were explaining the fact that their taxes paid for the stadium development, their taxes will pay for the stadium maintenance and that no anchor tenant had yet been found for the stadium.

They were of the opinion that it was a lot to pay for three weeks of use.
