They'll have to pay his entire contracted salary. Result.
It's only been a few days, maybe they're still in the cancellation period. I'm pretty sure they bought Koemen online and had him delivered.

As for Messi, I hope he follows through and leaves. The club leadership have badly mismanaged that club for years now. Their wage ratio is about 70%, they need a squad overhaul, and they're broke.

The president's offer to resign in return for Messi staying is pathetically desperate and won't fix the underlying problems with the club.

Even if Messi stays, I doubt he's winning the CL again with them. And Xavi doesn't seem like the solution either.

I would love to see him have a couple of great seasons in the PL before he retires. We aren't winning the title anytime soon, so I don't care about City getting him. Would be nice if he stops Liverpool going on a winning run for a few years.

Fuuuucking hell.

Lionel Messi has told Barcelona that he wants to leave the club immediately – and on a free transfer

The former Barça captain Carles Puyol has tweeted his support for Messi, saying “respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend”. Luis Suárez, who has already been told by Koeman that he can leave the club, responded with two applause emojis.

Messi was left angry and frustrated after his first meeting with Koeman. According to Spain’s Diario AS, the new Barcelona coach told Messi “your privileges here are over”

Messi’s camp believes that a clause in his contract means he can walk away for no fee. Barcelona, by contrast, insist that he is still bound by a €700m (£629m) buy-out clause. Barcelona believe the deadline for that clause to be applied has expired, as he had to inform them of his decision before the end of May. But given the exceptional nature of this season, which extended into the summer and did not formally end until the Champions League final last Sunday, Messi’s camp are set to argue that the deadline should be set on 31 August.

Joan Laporta, president of the club from 2003 to 2010, later called on Bartomeu to resign. “They have been undermining the morale of Messi to save themselves from the turmoil they have created,” Laporta tweeted. “If they resigned, there would still be hope that Messi would stay

Power play by Messi and his gang to force the president out...or genuinely wants to go.

So if suarez becomes free agent, anybody interested to take him? 33 years old suarez, back up to kane? He scored a wonderful goal against munich though

Bartomeu should resign whether Messi stays or goes. It's hard to imagine how he could've done worse in his spell as President. Leaving an ageing squad on massive wages to rot, spunking money on transfers that haven't worked out, almost destroying La Masia (more on that here).

His entire tenure has been nothing short of a disgrace despite the league titles.

I saw the figures earlier that Messi is on €60 million a year! If he stays the club have to renegotiate that surely. He’s obviously still a fabulous player but that’s too much money to give him. He’s not going to get paid that anywhere else and must be a bit of a burden to the club financially. Call his bluff I say. If the current board are on the way out next Spring what do they have to lose?

What if Messi just wants to try a different league? I know they'd rather keep him, but it seems extreme having a president of a football club step down to keep a 33 year old with probably 2/3 years left at the highest level when the rest of the team around him is in tatters.

Surely their fans can accept he gave them like 15 great years and now wants to move on, let the little **** go.

That president is the one that has let the team decline. Koeman is a shit appointment as well.
