If Liverpool can do it so can we. End of.

this is a fair point, cos liverpool had djimi traore (possibly the worst top-level footballer ive ever seen) at RB and djibril cisse (who after his accident, was about as good as chris armstrong).

we can match them with alan hutton (could easily have cost us couple of goals last night) at RB and peter crouch (hardly europe's finest).

ergo, we can win the champions league with the squad as it is.

tho i still feel nervous when i see hutton's name on the teamsheet..

Errrr, Barca maybe?

Yeah Barca are the team I fear most, I feel with our open approach they could exploit us with their quick movement and passing. But hell, if I could think of a dream final at Wembley (our second home) it would be Tottenham Hotspur vs Barcelona. One step at a time though. ;)

RB could be improved I think, but I'm more than happy with BAE. I think his understanding with Bale has played a huge part in GB developing into the unstoppable force that he is today.

Ekotto is a good FB but proper competition for his place wouldn't hurt. Kaboul at RB could be the way to go now that Daws is nearly back.

Kaboul Daws Gallas Ekotto

Good point about back-up for BAE. We don't really want Bale to go back to LB just because he's our only option there.

I think Kaboul will get enough game time at CB. I'd like to see us bring in Van Der Weil. He's highly rated, and while he's young he's got a bit of experience already - 28 games in Europe for Ajax and has played in the world cup final. Ajax may be willing to sell now they are out of the Champions League.

I like the Dutch kid too but surely we need to clear out afew RBs before we buy another. At first I didn't think Kaboul would make a good RB but after watching him there in our run in last season against some of the best clubs in the league he was quality. He ticks all the right boxes for the position and it would be great to have a RB so physically dominating at set-pieces too. I'd like to see him get an extended run there maybe 10-15 games straight to see how he does.

That would certainly be solid, but it may also be counter-productive long term. Gallas hasn't got long left in him, and Daws/ Kaboul is the future as a CB pairing. Fucking good one too! I'd rather Kaboul got game time in the middle to develop as a CB, rather than going to RB for a season or so and then having to readjust.

I love Benny, but I agree that we need to sign an understudy to put some pressure on him. Either that, or we switch Seb to LB. He's well suited to the role.

RB's an odd one. We've got Charlie, Hutton, and Walker. All good players, but each with weaknesses. A bit too slow and no good going forward in Charlie's case. Great attacking but a bit suspect defending for Hutton, despite his improvement. And youth and a lack of experience with Walker.

So we've got 3 quality players in that position, but we still may need to sign another to really hit the heights. It's an odd situation.

Agreed, and he likes coming out with the ball, which is obviously a lot more suited to the full back role than the CB role.

But he is doing well at present and its great that he can cover two positions and cover them well, gives us great options.

but if Kaboul became a top quality RB which he has all the attributes to become then what about this as our long term future defence

Kaboul Dawson Bassong Ekotto

Bassong came in and showed real quality when we got him playing with Daws, I rate him highly too. There's also no doubting Kaboom likes to get forward and join in with the attack so at RB we could maximize that potential. Definately got plenty of options at the back so really the only position we need abit of cover in is LB to compete with Ekotto and also flog a RB or 2. Would like to see more of Walker as it sounds like he's getting on really well at QPR.

On our day we are a match for anyone, and that includes Madrid or Barca. We have to firmly believe this.

Bassong did really well last year and I rate him for the future too. So you've got me in two minds now. Bastard.

With ALL our players fit and playing well then we could certainly test them. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to happen that often (the fit part).

It's just great to have so many quality options for a change. It will be interesting to see how Harry works it all out. Definately need to tighten up the flanks though.
