I'm not sure. Theoretically yes, but if you gave Gomes the added pressure of being a sweeper keeper and having to mop up the way Lloris does then I'd almost expect him to spontaneously combust into a ball of flames, the first time he came sprinting out of his box to make a decisive decision.

Given away or conceded? I think I remember one penalty but it shouldn't have been given. This was always my biggest argument with people who preferred Friedel over Gomes. Friedel never took any risks so people claimed he never made any mistakes but not taking a risk can be a mistake. Gomes might come for 100 crosses, miss 1 and concede a goal but that's got to be better than never coming for a cross and conceding more goals because it wasn't dealt with

FWIW I don't blame Friedel for tonights performance, it was a standard Friedel performance. As much as he doesn't make mistakes he doesn't pull off the sort of world class save that Gomes and Lloris can.

:) I've only seen very limited highlights and have heard the same thing. Didn't they make him captain for a game? Frightening stuff if you're a fan of Die Hoffe.

Poor old Harry Gomes. There was a time, for around six months, when he was the best keeper in the Premier League. Also got all those clean sheet time records. Definitely a fine keeper, as well as a crowd favourite. Just clearly the PL and chance at Tottenham has passed him by.

He is a horrendous keeper. Actually I think he is the worst hyped up keeper I've ever seen. I remember someone was saying (Maybe Hiddink if I remember correctly) that he is the best keeper in the world o_O

Some disgusting comments about a current Tottenham player who helped us into the CL with his magnificent performance against the scum.

He was goalkeeper in the season we conceded fewest home goals in our history. 10 in 19 games.

He has the club record for most consecutive clean sheets - 7.

He held three out of the top four longest period of time between goals conceded in European football history.

He holds the record for highest percentage of clean sheets in the Eredivisie.

I wish I was that horrendous.

Sublime to Ridiculous - thats what we were always going to get with Heurelho, and thats what we got.

Amazingly talented goalkeeper, who was weak mentally - which is why his mistakes were lapses of concentration or rushes of blood to the head, he felt the need to wear a gumshield, and went down hurt at the slightest contact.

Tony Parks got into his head for a while and we saw the best of him, shame it never lasted.

Too many people are quick to rubbish him yet forget it was he who was in goal when we made CL, beat Milan away when he made some unreal saves in the San Siro and had his confidence shot to pieces with HR world class man management once he made a few mistakes.

From here on now Lloris must start in the EL games if we really have intentions of winning it. Playing Brad with a high line defence is committing footballing suicide against the better sides.

I like Gomes, I'd let him shag my wife

Shame that he was a "farkin liarbillyt" so arry brought in a keeper who was more solid, but had different "farkin liarbilltys"

Thank fuck for Hugo

I loved the guy, but no. Gomes made world class saves, but left in a shit load of easy goals too. And that's not counting the catastrophe's in left in such as the ones at Fulham and at home to Real Madrid. He was a saver of great shots, not a great shot saver. The thought of him sweeping behind our defense would give me nightmares.

I don't think Friedel did too much wrong last night. Comparing his sweeping abilities to Lloris is unfair because Lloris is one of the best in the World at that. If Friedel tried to do that last night we would have been down to 10 men very early. Playing a ridiculously high line with him in goal is suicidal and that's were the fault should lie.

No, that's why AVB doesn't pick him and sent him on loan to get rid of him.

Why bring it up? Are you saying last night was all Friedel's fault?

It was the fault of AVB sending the team out with the wrong approach. They played to try and not lose 3-0 and not as they should have done. Panic then set in and we were in totally the wrong frame of mind.

The buck stops at AVB for that. The players will learn from it, in one respect it was a good experience for them because they came through it by changing and trying to do something with the ball, which took what 15 minutes to score then.

I hope AVB learn from it to, he learnt from mistakes at Chelsea and mistakes earlier in the season so I expect he will.

Lloris would have made no difference, the through balls would still have been to their strikers and not far enough advanced for Lloris to get to. People are clutching at straws and wrongly looking for a scapegoat in Friedel. They played angled balls, not balls straight through the middle and with Naughton never actually at full-back, our defenders had to cover for him as well. He should have been taken off and replaced by Benny at half time.

People should be asking what was Gallas doing, what was Naughton doing, what was Parker doing, what was AVB doing? Not blaming an easy target in Friedel.
