I'm not that bothered about CB signings TBH. I think Caulker and Kaboul are the future. Pace, power, and two good footballers.

I agree Daniel, i've just more or less put the same in the "summer transfer and targets" thread.

I would much rather see Caulker come back, he has PL experience which Vertonghen doesn't have, and looks a player. I'm quite excited about kaboul and Caulker next season.

Kaboul, Dawson, Caulker, have Gallas and King limping on to the bench. I don't think a first choice centre back is needed urgently.

However, we could do with a utility player who is comfortable at centre half as well as other positions, as well as a young centre back with potential for emergencies (we've got that Brazilialn Bruno Ulivi or something?)

Agreed and I would rather sort out the future of Gallas and King before we start signing some CB's

Couldn't disagree more with the above comments. I'd see this boy as an absolutely top priority for us. He's a class act. Recent months have sadly shown that we can no longer rely on King and Gallas, Dawson's had his fair share of injury problems over the past few seasons and Caulker has yet to play a Premier League game for us. Vertonghen and Kaboul with Caulker and Dawson pushing them and playing cup games, and either Ledley or Gallas as fifth choice would be top drawer.

Why is it that the other clubs get in early and make their signings and we are still messing around right up to midnight on deadline day!

Kaboul, Vertonghen, Dawson, Caulker would be fantastic. Sell Gallas to some rich Dubai club, King to become a coach and get rid of Bassong and Nelsen.

Problem is I can see one of Caulker or Dawson not even getting on the bench, and one needs game time and one is too established for that to happen.

Even with Gallas out for the first six months of the season and King being his intermittent self Bassong hardly got a look in. I think it's a lot of money that could be better spent elsewhere.

If you can do a deal for 6 mill tho I'm all for it!

Mainly due to Harrys lack of rotation

Kaboul, Caulker, Daws and sign Douglas - sorted. Bit of everything in there but they all have height.

If we sign Vertoghen, or someone else, then the likelihood is that Caulker will want to move to Swansea permanently. He's said he wants to fight for a place in the team, and us having 4 other senior CBs (Kaboul, New Signing, Dawson, and I count King and Gallas as half a CB each) will push him away.

He's been earning rave reviews at Swansea, their defensive record has been very good. He has done everything asked of him to get a chance, I think we should give him that chance in the same way we did Walker this season.

I don't think you can afford to be that sentimental about individual players - X needs game time. It doesn't worry Utd with Vidic, Ferdinand, Jones, Smalling and Evans does it? It's about always having grade A options for every competition so that, for example Kyle Walker doesn't have to play every game in every competition. Vertonghen is a world class centre back available for £7 million and reportedly interested in the concept of signing for us. Sounds a total no-brainer for me.

But thats because he has been playing nearly a hundred league games for other teams something IIRC, has never been achieved for CB playing in the premiership at the age of 20

Plus I wouldn't mind having the bassong that led us to champions league qualification if possible

I quite like the idea of Walker, Caulker, Kaboul and Benny at the back. Quite a lot of pace there which is important these days.

We can't start buying for next season if there is uncertainty surrounding the managers position. Levy needs to either back Redknapp and offer him a new contract or dispense of his services. The later will need to be done as soon as the seasons finished and a new manager appointed ASAP to allow for him to buy the players he needs.

If Redknapp is to be offered a new deal, then lets do it now and then identify players he wants for next season and get on the front foot.

To be fair Vidic has played 6 games all season, both king and Gallas played more than that and Jones isn't considered a Good enough CB yet, Smalling also spent most of the season as a RB only recently being playing CB, whereas we have 5 players who have played CB nearly all their careers
