True dat. Their local rivals call them the Monkey Hangers. In response, the Hartlepool fans sing We hung the monkey, we'll hang you!

The version of the story I heard was that a monkey escaped from the zoo during the Napoleonic Wars, when fear of a French invasion was at its height. None of the locals had ever seen a Frenchman, so when they saw the monkey they thought it was a French spy and when they caught it decided to give it some rough local justice for plotting to invade Old Blighty.

The moral of the story is, don't go monkeying around in Hartlepool :)

I'm not sure that is the moral of the story considering they actually elected the guy who plays 'H'Angus the Monkey' as mayor of Hartlepool, seemingly agreeing with his platform of being a monkey.

I don't know why Kick-it-Out are trying to stir it up.
Because unless there are notions of racism they have no purpose.

This is a major problem of lobby groups. They actually have a vested interest in the problem that they fight remaining, otherwise they become an irrelevance and are out of jobs/ status/ roles

This is such bullshit, Bob Marley does not need to be defended by do gooders like this. His music still speaks for itself and he's done more to combat racism (even while he's been dead) than kick it out can ever dream of.

One of the things I love about Bob Marley is that wherever you go in the world, you can put his music on a jukebox and people will chill out and tap their feet. I can't think of a single other artist who can bring people together like he can, even to this day! He will always be a true legend and I don't think anyone will ever come close to what he's achieved.

Personally I would have thought it is substantially more racist taking a famous black person and making them white or forcing people to only be able to do fancy dress of their own race.

If Bob Marley came back to earth and went to the game and saw a low of fans dressed up as him, would he see it as a sign of respect, touching and funny, or would he find it racist and run off to call the Society Of Black Lawyers?
Depends, if it is done Al Jolson style then I suspect he wouldn't be happy about it. I think the suggestion by Kick it out, is hugely insulting to Hartlepool fans.
