Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger reckons the Champions League will have turned into a European league within a decade.

Speaking in the build-up to the Gunners' Champions League qualifier for the group stages against Celtic, Wenger said that financial demands would dictate the move.

However, he does say that he would be keen to keep domestic leagues running, even if that meant playing the European league games in midweek - although that would necessitate two teams.

This can only be bad for 99.9% of football surely.

i'm not saying this will never happen, but would it be sustainable?

It's all well and good having the like of Barca v Bayern and Inter v Man Utd every now and then, but if games like that were on every week, wouldn't the novelty wear off pretty quick?
How are fans gonna be able to afford to travel all round europe on a weekly basis when most of the time stadiums for domestic matches don't even sell out?
It's all very well saying that they'll be a big tv deal in the pipeline somewhere along the way, and every man and their dog will be queueing up to get tv subscription for the 'Euro Super League' but if the stadiums are gonna be half full with little or no atmosphere, how long will it be before fans start tuning out and returning watching their own domestic leagues?
Part empty stadium don't make for good viewing.

As for the teams that will be left behind, I don't see there being too much of an impact on the way that they can continue to operate. They will still get some sort of tv deal, the prices for tickets will drop (IMO), and attendances will be bigger than ever.
The only problem that they will have would be if one of the 'break away' side comes calling to sign their latest up and coming teenager or star player, ideally I would like to see the domestic league agree to some kind of self imposed transfer embargo on selling to anyone in the newly formed 'Euro Super League'.
Would that be workable. Unlikely IMO.

In all likelyhood, it's not gonna happen IMO.

It may happen, but I am not so sure it will. The current economic climate has shown that there is only so much football that people will pay to watch, it is not a golden goose that keeps laying.

I don't see UEFA or FIFA supporting the formation of a Superleague the loss in revenue to the domestic leagues would be substantial. Half of the clubs in the Premier League would go into administration.
