I can't say that I've been wildly impressed by Hutton either. He's OK, but he certainly hasn't lived up to the hype he was getting and the praise that was being lavished on him—he was losing his man and getting turned often enough last season. He's hardly been tearing it up going forward, either.

I agree with everything you said and I really can't wait to see Corluka in the DM role.
Getting back to Hutton,he hasn't really been that impressive since he signed and I am not sure why some of our fans have raved about his performances.
If we had Woodgate and King in central defence and Corluka in front as a DM,I believe we would have the foundations for a top 4 defence. However we are still weak at right back and left back - Bale and Hutton have not performed so far this season and Ekotto is a liability.
For example,if we had solid experienced Premiership players like Glen Johnson and Wayne Bridge as our fullbacks,we would have a rock solid defence that would be comparable to the very best.

It's funny you should mention Glen Johnson. When he was at Chelsea he was labelled as very suspect defensively. He improved a lot at Portsmouth in terms of his positioning and he does a pretty good job of standing the player up. I don't how much of that is to do with him simply maturing as a player and actually getting a number of games consistently or whether it is more to do with the work on the training field under Redknapp and Tony Adams.

In fact all of the Portsmouth defence improved measurably (bar Campbell who maintained his solid level). The fact they had a solid defence based around Linvoy Primus, Noe Pamarot and a defensively suspect Glen Johnson surely indicates that players can perform well even if they have limited ability.

Hutton has the potential to be a good defender, but hasn't shown it with us up to this point. He started well when he first came, he was strong in the tackle and got forward well enough. He does however allow himself to get beaten too often and gets caught out of position much like our other full backs. I am sure that it is something the coaching staff are well aware of and over time we will see our fullbacks improving. Just a few simple things will make all of them so much better. They need to all learn to force the opponent onto the weaker foot (which is to do with positioning) and to make the first mover and most importantly to stop far more crosses coming in.

Bale, Hutton and BAE probably have far more technical ability than the full backs Harry had at Portsmouth, but they don't do the basics well enough at this moment. Now Harry has to get them playing and doing the simple things much better. So far it seems that Harry is trying to get the basics right first with all of our team, so I am confident that things will improve as far as the full backs are concerned.

Hutton should never have been thrown back into the first team after missing pre season, he is definately not in shape, he looks bigger than last season. I think he will come good, defensively he was brilliant against man yoo last season. If he was frozen out I am sure fergie would be in with a bid. Current form though then I would go with corluka who looks a different player than the guy who played against villa

Need to play Hutton as first choice so we get the best possible price from Man Utd .

If King or Woodgate get crocked for any length of time then Corluka would be my choice of replacement .

Still not sure whether Gunter can be a regular starter or will always remain a squad player .

When Hutton gets back to match fitness i wouldn't disagree with this. Ekotto is still getting caught time and time again. His pace gets him out of situations at times but he's a weekness in our are defence. Although I'd even stick Gunter at RB instead of Hutton right now and play Corluka on the left. Gunter has done well when he's played so far.

here here - though if its a straight choice between Hutton and Corluka right now its Corluka by a mile

IOMLS,I really hope you are right and that Harry can get the best out of Hutton and Bale because I am certainly not writing them off already.
My only concern is that I feel our defence doesn't offer our keeper enough protection and that our regular fullbacks have been weak so far this season.

Too inconsistent to play Corluka at right back for me. By that i mean, he would need to play centre back when King is rested. Unless we play Dawson more often, but i'd rather we didn't. So Corluka as imediate cover for King, and Hutton at right back for me.

lots of ifs, buts and maybes in the replies in this thread. I'm sure I stated to ignore the fact that he wants to play DM and assume king and woodgate are fit. :p

I am happy with them both. Hutton is clearly not match fit. I was surprised Ramos played him as soon as he could. There is still a lot more to come from Hutton I am sure of that. He needs time. Corluka is painfully slow, but can read the game very well. He is also very confident on the ball. He is not as direct as Hutton but he looks a very decent player. Versatile as well. So once Hutton gets up to speed I think he will be our RB. Corluka I can see as our play anywhere in the defence man. He is not a LB, but for me he would be a better option than Ekotto who is an accident waiting to happen every time he is on the pitch.

Unfortunately, so does Hutton—and BAE comes away with the ball from a challenge far more often.

Even if he is not up to fall speed yet his decision making has been awful since coming back from injury. He keeps getting his basic defending wrong and there is no excuse for making school boy errors.

I like Chorlie but Hutton is a more consistent and faster player, but it doesn't seem like he's the same player since his injury but I rate him a little better.

Now if the question was about CB then Chorlie would shade it cos he's been there and Hutton is unproven.

It's a tight one though cos both are good lads and I hope they both stick around.

Hutton for sure. Corky IMO should be groomed as a permanent center back.

We already have Salty as backup for the right back position.

As for people doubting Hutton:

"Hutton was exceptional," Ferguson told The Daily Telegraph.

"He looks as though he will become a superstar once he gets that little extra bit of experience."

I think Hutton needs to play - he's class and just needs to get himself match fit and back in the groove!

Corkula does a good job there but as has been said he's a bit slow and would rather see him covering at centre back and it it's interestingly true his preferred position of defensive midfield (see comment I've quoted below).

I also second comments made about Gunter at left back - would much prefer him there over Ekotto and puzzled as to why he's never given any run-outs there (even at the tail end of last season when we had no left backs fit and Ramos was criminally ignoring Lee). Thought he was good on his left as well as his right?

For the record Corluka sees himself as defensive midfielder who can also play all across defence.

Where has this been said? Never seen it during all my trawlings of NewsNow!

He has? Always thought it was strange Sunderland buying him and playing him over a very promising and good solid right back in Phil Bardsley.

Not sure where's the best fit, but Corluka isn't a "backup" and needs to be in the starting 11.
