Unemployment sits at 60% for 21-29 year olds in SA even though they could easily afford dropping £1b on Newcastle not sure how it would look when unemployment is so high. Also they have quite ambitious development plans for the country that will cost 100s of billions to develop the economy post oil. Personally don't think they will do a city or psg

Anyway they will prob drop a £100m on JM now. Just to prove me wrong
Don’t think the government in Saudi needs to worry about things like that. They’d easily crush an uprising, brutally and quickly. They’ve got more money than god too so chucking a measly billion or two at Newcastle won’t even scratch the surface.

Since when did Maddison become the saviour and the player to ensure we win a title?

I've always felt he's slightly overrated. Nor do I think he is a Conte player.

12 league goals 8 assists last season might add a bit to a side which has very little creativity Kane and Kulu apart

He wouldn't be operating in the same manner at Spurs, I feel he's more of a focus in that Leicester team, whereas Conte isn't looking for that type of player.

Definitely think he'd add a lot to this squad, but seems that Conte isn't interested for whatever reason. I guess it'd be the same reason we weren't interested in Eriksen, although personally I think both would've strengthened us.

At the moment we create very little through the middle, so we're reliant on our wing backs to do that (a little bit like Liverpool, although Thiago's passing range is great). The early signs are promising that Perisic can definitely improve our productivity from out wide on the left, but RWB, despite being our most stocked position, is probably still the most glaring weakness in our starting 11.

I doubt we sign anyone in that role unless we sell 2 of our current lot, but I'd be fine missing out on Maddison if it meant going big on an elite RWB. If we don't get that, I don't see why we wouldn't look at JM.

Create little through the middle? We did this all the time last year...

Hopefully we're still looking at Paqueta. Think he'd be a better bet than Zaniolo.
Remember what I said when I first posted about Zaniolo. Conte thinks he's been used incorrectly and given poor instruction that doesn't get the best out of him since his injury.

Given how much Conte's improved players, or played to their strengths in his system (Doherty) while coaching players to a higher standard, you have to have some trust in his assessment.

Regardless, it's great we're still actively trying to strengthen. it's going to be a long season given the WC - we'll need plenty of depth

But he wasn't he was playing in the inside right roll exactly the same role kulu plays for Spurs at the end of last season when he was in superb form

Would be interesting to see how this new Maddison ITK pans out. Perhaps they're in a bigger mess than we thought. Not sure if anyone else has noticed but Leicester are selling Schmeichel to Nice, they must need some serious money if they're prepared to let him go too!

Bigger mess than some people thought.
They've bought nobody with the season starting this week and that's not down to some clever strategy.

You'd think the fact he's 35, with a contract expiring next summer has a bearing.

We all hear different things from time to time depending on the source but again I'm told we do hold an interest in Maddison and although he isn't Conte's preference, he wouldn't be against him coming.

I mentioned a few weeks back that this is one we may revisit later in the window but Newcastle's interest may have accelerated that.

I still think Zaniolo is the main target and discussions have been taking place. But if they aren't going well, then Paqueta and Maddison are real possibilities according to my source.

Again, we don't always hear the same and others have a far better track record than I do. But I can only pass on what I'm told and that is we do hold an interest and would be willing to pay the required amount.

@Rob is there a reason that Hotspur88 has lost his blue background?

Maddison has always struck me as a player with a bit of an ego. If ITK have information that he is 3rd choice behind Zaniolo, and Paqueta, there is every liklehood he might realise this too, so is he really going to want to come to us knowing this and when he is not even likely to be a guaranteed starter and more likely a rotation option ?
Whilst we have CL to offer him and Newcastle are not in any European competition that works in our favour, but if he only gets in as a sub in those top games is that going to attract him here ?

If he wasn't Home Grown he might even be lower than 3rd choice in terms of Conte's transfer preferences.

He will be a guaranteed starter for Newcastle and I suspect they will offer him more in wages.

Based on this I think the chances of him coming here appear less likely but that's not me saying it can be completely ruled out.

I've said it before but I don't understand the obsession with Maddison in here. I've always thought he was bang average personally. He had a good season last year to be fair but I don't think he is all that great and would be pretty underwhelmed if we got him.
