Mourinho firstly needs to get some kind of cohesion into current squad that will make us more difficult to beat

I'm not sure how likely that is to be honest. I think he may have had that exact thought upon joining us, but game after game is probably realising how tough that may be to accomplish. Especially when a good defence is also a defence that is well protected and we don't really have the personal to protect the back line.

I just hope that there is a willingness to spend well this month because all the signs (whether true or not) have been that we won't. I feel like the need for certain additions is so extreme that we'd have things well in the pipeline even at this stage but it doesn't feel like it.

yes but maybe any new manager would have done the same?

there’s no way to prove that ‘any’ new manager would have done the same.

What we know is that Mourinho has improved the team / results since his arrival at the club.

None of the current players were bought by him. Since his arrival, he has had to use makeshift squads because of unfit players , suspensions, and injuries.

Let’s give him more time before we judge him.

That's legit bonkers. I'm not a hater at all but man, doesn't feel like we've done that well, despite an obvious uptick since he took over.

GD, I shudder to think how we'd be doing in the table if the change hadn't been made tbh.

Really? I’m completely the opposite. It feels that we’ve pushed on since Poch has gone, especially attacking wise. Plus for me going to games is more enjoyable now than the last year under Poch.

I do think Jose at the moment is stuck between a rock and a hard place. He said himself he could fix a fair few of our defensive frailties, but that would compromise our attacking play and I feel he’s very conscious of not going down the conservative, perceived negative route.

Issue is that might be the best thing in the short term because we are making so many basic defensive mistakes and unless we can be harder to score against we will not get top four.
I would rather win 1-0 for a while and get some defensive solidity than end up with 2-2 or win 3-2 that topsy turvy style wins fuck all.

A wins a wins as long as we are heading in the right direction. Poch struggled to tighten our defence in his first season and thus we had a bad defensive record but tightened that up in his 2nd season, I suspect that Jose is looking to do the same thing.

We need to get a winning streak going . Once we start to win more often , confidence will flow in the players. Confident players play attractive football.

Success breeds confidence. Our players need that badly.

I suspect he is and in fairness who better to achieve that than Jose who builds from the back normally, he probably is stuck in tinkering too much in case it takes something away from the overall team dynamics.
It might take him a while and he can only do so much with some of the players so he will need to upgrade and that remains to be seen if he is allowed to push on.

Agree we have been poor for nearly a year now so inconsistent and fragile.

Since Mourinho took over only Liverpool have got more points than us in the league, Man City the same. We’d be third on GD if the league has started that week. That’s pretty impressive given the form the players were / are in.
But...but I thought Hose is a busted flush though?

Salty neg from Nostradamus lol.

In all honesty the start in my opinion has been pretty Tim Sherwood, minus the constant histrionics and a huge amount more PR savvy. Results have been better than the performances. We've found, or at least did in the first few games, a way to play with fast transitions that was effective and got the attack firing and individuals looking good. Lets be honest though, we're also wide open, have almost zero control on any game, and so if we've met a team that is either half-decent or at least organised and putting up some resistance then it's not looked very good, has it.....

That's just opining on the evidence so far. Beyond that it's fairly pointless to argue much more. Mourinho has come in mid-season, he's said he wont change much, rock the boat, and will have to work with what he's got for the rest of the campaign, things will continue in this fashion. A lot of games where we can overwhelm the lesser teams with our attacking talent, a fair few though no doubt where we will look pretty muck. A lot of fans still seem to be eyeing the top four and have real hopes of it, maybe we can but personally I still treat this season as a write off and have zero expectations.

Yeah after we closed the gap I foolishly allowed myself to believe we had a good shot at top four after all.

We were so comprehensively outplayed in the Chelsea game though and the defending the other night has brought me back to realism.

If the players had any dignity, they should be looking at themselves in the mirror. Performances under Poch were fairly crap the whole of last season and completely crap this season. Performances under JM haven’t been dramatically different, though results have bounced up. Yet we say we have a squad filled with talent.

That points at the players not the two managers.

I feel very little affinity or connection with this set of players when compared to those of the past. That could be my age to be honest, but I’m sure their conceited self importance plays a part.

I liked Poch. I like JM. I worry about Levy investing to make the changes necessary. And changes are needed with a lack of intent and leaders on the field.

To me JM looks uncomfortable here, a bit like the new Stepfather not sure if he tell the real dads children off. I'm sure he will get things right. He must have had some agreement with Levy about signings.

He's not the Jose we knew and hated, he's a bit mellow so far. I don't know if Daniel has something to do with that.

Let's see what this transfer window brings.

Its still early days, but I do think it will all end in tantrums and tears, probably sooner than we think.

How has he been anything like Tim Sherwood? He has come in and tried to go to back to basics, he has shown his ability to effect games from the touch line several times and had a positive PR impact in the short time has been in post. Pretty much the opposite of Tim Sherwood who basically decided to alienate half the squad and be a prick from day one

Are we to expect anything from the transfer window then?

In terms of football its been much more like Sherwood/Redknapp. Focus on fast attack and just outgunning the multitude of lesser PL teams due to individual talent, very little control of proceedings, wide open games to suit fast transitions, and so wide open defensively, not a great work rate when we lose the ball, etc etc etc. And on the whole results on paper being better than the performances being convincing.

Who knows? Get a good amount for CE and quickly we could bring in a decent defender. Maureen wouldn't have joined without reassurances about signings. My problem is Levy haggles too much and leaves things to the last moment. That must be frustrating for our managers it certainly was for Poch.

The way levy operates isn't going to change the same messing about will continue and then Jose will get frustrated like all the others.
