One thing I'm really struggling to understand is why we made only 2 subs?!? Pure madness. I appreciate we have to pander to Kane but come on even he'll know he shouldn't of been on the pitch last night for 90 mins. He was embarrassingly off the pace from get go. Second half we played with 8 tired men and Kane and Jose is to blame for that

Don't see how his tactics will make us competitive with Fraser/Willian, Zouma, Hojbjerg. Thought we needed a rebuild 2 years ago and we are getting older, more injured and worse with every season. Pointless to get Mourinho and give him some bargains in transfer market. Either give him 200m or get a different kind of coach.

One game in and he is already back to moaning.... FFS! He did have options to change it attacking wise but fucked up his subs! RS should have come on instead of Gedson for a start!

Isn't he our leftback of the future?

Seems like no one knows where that young man should be playing.

Last summer was disastrous for us, and we made signings. Jokes.

He isn’t going to get £200m though is he! To me this is why he was always the wrong appointment in first place he was never going to fit into the way Levy runs the club.

I thought the game was prime to get TN ( behind Kane )and Lo Celso both on together Both would have held the ball and create chances . Weird TN didn’t get mentioned at the end from Jose .
Apart from that Dier soft penalty which cost us the three points, I think we did ok . Happy with a point

You do realise that United had a load of rusty players too, right?
And it took a penalty for them to score. I don't think anyone was debating the fact that United sat on us more. But they're a pressing team now. Arguably with Pogba and Fernandes that doesn't actually suit them. Both players have fantastic vision and early balls into the channels for their rapid players works better.

They rarely got behind us, that was a tactical decision by us.

It was boring, and being passive is frustrating. But the tactics could have worked with just removing Kane, sticking Son on the CBs to play on the break.

A fair a balanced assessment

I feel the exactly the same and can only assume that there will be changes such as ndom on Tuesday otherwise not playing him at all yesterday makes no sense
I think we’ll see a more ‘positive’ side against West Ham - and that’s what a good manager does-adjusts his tactics to different situations.
I saw a lot more shape yesterday and a good few positive signs that players seemed to understand their roles - this was clearly lacking prior to the break
Still upbeat, still supporting and still prepared to give the time required to offer a true assessment

If you have 200m to spend you don’t need to get José. Bring in someone cheaper who plays good football and can foster some optimism.

Bad appointment but many on here thought it would be justified if he won us an FA cup because he’s a serial winner. He hasn’t taken a club to the next level since inter milan so people were willing to overlook the fact it had been 10 years since he had kicked a club on. You can have your FA cup with Jose but only if you give him exorbitant sums to spend/waste. That ain’t us.

Winning a trophy isn't us but we will take it, not saying that we will because I can't see him staying in the job, it has fall out with levy and disaster written all over it.

It was noticeable how much better we were after the drinks breaks. Scored in the first half shortly after it and then were much better after the one in the second half. That tells me he is having an impact and also that the team still needs nursing through games to play the way he wants.

So many attacking players now that the whole squad is fit yet I fear we will see them defending more than anything else.
I will say that yesterday I think the defending was improved and that was with the use of the wide attackers tracking back but there really has to be a much better balance.

You can see what we can do when we do go forward too but it's at too few times throughout the match and it's often in a panicky "oh my god we're attacking" fashion that fizzles out and it's back to defending until the next rare opportunity we get to attack.

The West Ham game will be very interesting, a team that we're without a doubt better than, being 'at home', them not being able to use their overly-vocal fans due to them hating us and Mourinho doesn't have the excuse/reasoning of not having players available.

I think if we play so passively like that against Arsenal, he'll lose a lot more fans that believed he was the correct appointment. That game will make or break his appointment in the eyes of the fanbase I reckon.

Re West Ham, I'm confident of beating them. For one, we have an extra day's rest, which must be a huge advantage in terms of recovery at this stage of this mini season.

I can't believe there have been so many replies to this thread without anyone mentioning arguably the most important position of all that needs to be strengthened this summer.

Goalkeeper.

I don't disagree that our full-backs are weak, our centre-backs seemingly on the decline, that we haven't got a "traditional" defensive midfielder nor traditional "striker" to back up Kane.

However, even though he used to be world class, Lloris has been on a major decline for the past three years. In 17/18 he was inconsistent. In 18/19 he was a liability. And this season, when fit, he has been even worse still.

You can come up with the best tactical game plan, dominate the play, get in the heads of the opposition - but if your goalkeeper makes a mistake then that can all go to shit in an instant. And Lloris has made far too many mistakes that have destroyed game plans and shifted the dynamic of the games, particularly big games, away from us over the last couple of years. Let's take Leipzig away as a prime example - we were up against an inexperienced side that hadn't really played in two-legged European knockout ties before, if we got at them and got an away goal we could have turned the tie around - we then started the game really well and it looked like Mourinho had a plan, but two absolute howlers from Lloris and suddenly we're 2-0 down after 20 minutes, our heads drop, they are signing and dancing and we have to open up to their pace on the counter attack. Yes he played well in the first leg, but games like that are extremely rare these days, games like the away leg are not.

More mistakes listed here:

Three years is not a blip. It's not a poor run of form - it's a decline in ability. I had hoped that after his injury layoff he'd have had some time to get his head in place and come back stronger, but he came back even worse. A real shame, but we have to eventually say enough is enough - the mistakes are too frequent and too costly.

Well this aged horribly didn't it.
