As I remember, MP was a Lewis appointment - Levy wanted someone else.I have a question/hypothetical regarding the Jose appointment and funds issue.
Somewhere along the line yesterday I read a few posts about how Joe Lewis was very much wanting us to sign Mourinho. The same Joe Lewis who AFAIK (which is admittedly not a lot) keeps himself and his money away from Tottenham as much as possible. Levy is the man who runs this club at the behest of Lewis, but Lewis (again from what I've read in the past) doesn't get involved in an investment sense unless Levy asks directly as this will affect Levy's pay cheque.
Jose is not cheap, his wages are huge, greater than every manager's bar Pep (correct me if I'm wrong). Such a thing coupled with buying out the coaches from Lille will have cost a lot, more than what we would expect Levy to have normally sanctioned. This type of spending seems out of character, like a teacher who is suddenly buying up properties left right and centre, there has to be a source for this new found wealth and spending pattern.
This brings me to my hypothetical. Has Uncle Joe put his hand in his pocket? If so, has that been at the request of Levy or because the man has suddenly decided he wants to throw some cash around? If we do spend significant money over the next 8 months, I'd have trouble understanding how we are coming by it.
Levy's status (if not height) has risen greatly since then with the building of the new stadium. If he said that he wanted MP out as he was destabilising the club, and wanted Mourinho instead, then Lewis would OK that, I think.
The other thought is that Enic are still fattening up the club for sale. A high profile manger is another piece in that puzzle
