Quite simply the line we were sold about it not being possible to keep Bale as his head had been turned was bollox.

Look at Suarez now, and how well Rogers and the Liverpool management have played it.

True but Suarez was never going to go for a record fee, while I do like Brendan Rodgers and feel he is probably a good man manager the way he and LFC handled the whole rasism incident and bitegate IMO was terrible so lets not get carried away.

Personally we probably had a better chance of keeping Berba or Modders than Bale once a record bid was lodged. Just wait and see what happens at Liverpool with Suarez when he asks for his next pay rise, if Madrid or Munich came n for him seriosuly he will get his move.

Selling a player for £80+ million pounds is very different to selling a player for £40,000,000,01p. Especially to a rival.

We wouldn;t have sold Bale at that money, but had Madrid offered John Henry what they offered us for Bale, Suarez would have gone. The reason no one offered more than the fee Aresnal did, is because no one wanted to take a chance spending an obscene amount of money on a very good, but very controversional player.

Bale was desperate for the move, it was always going to happen. We move on.

So was Suarez. The point is Real would have paid £80m the summer after, and £50m the one after that the season after when his contract was starting to run down.

What would Bale have done if the window had closed and he was still here? Moped a few weeks? Maybe. After that, would he have just got on with it like Suarez? Definitely.

The situations aren't comparable. If someone was willing to pay the 50 mil or whatever that Liverpool wanted, he would have been sold.

Do you really believe Liverpool would have kept Suarez if they were offered a world record fee?

The reason they didn't sell him to Arsenal is because they are a rival club. If Madrid had offered £86m he would have gone.

Liverpool and Suarez will open contract talks again soon, the next one he signs will be very specific about his clause. He will go after the World Cup and it'll be for a lot of money.

The big thing that people seem to overlook, was how Suarez's suspension actually benefited Liverpool in this transfer saga.

If Suarez had been eligible to start this season, he would have had to decide whether to play or go on strike. It's more than likely he would have refused to play while the transfer window was still open, he did after all, try not to play in their warm up games.

The fact that he was suspended anyway, meant Liverpool avoided having to decide what to do with a player on strike. So to say they handled the situation better than we handled Bale isn't fair. Bale effectively went on strike with his 'injuries'. There is very little you can do as a Club once a player refuses to play. (See Berbatov, Modric for more proof).

So Suarez being a dirty cheating bastard, actually ended up doing Liverpool a favour in being able to keep him at the Club another season.

Bale wouldn't train and I'm pretty sure he would have done a Berbatov before a game!

So Suarez is a better professional than Bale? Lucky we got rid then ...

I think Suarez realized that until someone was willing to pay for him that he needed to shut up and get on with it. It's no coincidence that when no-one came in with a bid they wanted he came out to the press saying he wanted to stay. Real Madrid made it clear that they would pay for Bale.

Not saying he's a better professional, by no means. In fact his poor disciplinary record probably helped Liverpool keep hold of him, who do you think told Arsenal Suarez had, what he perceived to be a minimum release clause of £40M, Suarez! He turned up to training and got on with the job. Now will that happen this summer? I'm guessing not. Once a player refuses to train and play your sunk, you have to sell him!

Almost every single example of a club keeping a player who pushed for a move shows that once the window is shut everything turns back to normal.

The problem is the detriment, or possible detriment, keeping an unhappy player will cause to squad morale.

I think Bale would've played to his limit if he stayed: he's ambitious and wouldn't allow himself to stagnate.

I don't necessarily think selling him for a world record fee was a mistake, it just seems that in retrospect the money was spent unwisely.

If all the players we bought had clicked then we wouldn't be moaning about having lost Bale. Who knows, in a few months Lamela, Eriksen and Soldado could hit some proper form and we could be pleased with the deals again. Things change so quickly in football; a few months ago everyone was banging on about how we should've paid up for Benteke, and now he's scrapping for his place in the Villa team.
