Lack of intelligence is the root of the problems at current squad.

We sold our three most clever players in Keane, Berba and Malbranque.

Who would you say is most clever player now? For me it’s obvious – Modric, but only on the basis of performances for Croatia. And Huddlestone. But both of them now play peripheral roles.

None of the rest I can refer to as clever players.
Zokora? LOL
Jeans? Give me a break. Lennon, Bent? Not at all.
Dos Santos and Bale are too young. Bentley not showing it.
I rate our defenders – Woody, King, Hutton. But they are more athletic that clever.
Same goes for O’Hara .

In my view you can’t be successful without intelligent players in forward positions.

Good post.
That's why if fit I'd start Huddlestone ahead of Zokora anyday.
I know Hudd has his faults but against Zokora the positives outweigh the negatives.
Some of the balls he can thread through are class and failing that atleast most of his passes reach his team mates.
\the only thing Zokora has achieved in the opposition half was the dive against pompey 2 seasons back.

Unfortunately Hudd is not clever in his reading of the game, so he is unable to compensate for his lack of athleticism.

Intelligence used to be a stat in cm2 and they removed in later versions. I suppose it's because it relates to many areas of the game and can be split into sub categories. It could be interpreted as decision making, positioning, reading of the game, creativity and probably many more aspects. I guess the type of intelligence needed depends on the position on the pitch.

A large proportion of the intelligence we lost by selling Keane, Berbatov and Malbranque was probably made up from creativity and experience. Modric has shown for Croatia that he posseses this creativity. The Hudd does also, but as eddiebaily says you could question his positioning and reading of the game.

The most intelligent player we have had recently was probably Carrick but his positioning and reading of the game was hardly appreciated until he left.

In comparison with Zokora's reading of the game Hudd is Einstein.
