Andre Villas-Boas wants Tottenham to enter the race for Leighton Baines if they make the Champions League, writes the Sunday People.
The England left-back has two years left on his Everton deal and has been the subject of interest from Manchester United for the past two seasons.
But Spurs boss Villas-Boas has made a new left-back one of his chief priorities and a bid for the 28-year-old has been discussed. United have always baulked at Everton’s £15million asking price, but the player could be available for nearer £12m as his contract begins to run down.
And, while Baines is a loyal club man, he knows his chances of overhauling Ashley Cole as England’s first choice before the World Cup could depend on a move to a top-four club.
Spurs are ready to sell Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Villas-Boas has also expressed an interest in Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao, but he is likely to be more expensive than Baines.

Can't see it happening but would love it. He's been the best left back in the league the past couple of seasons and would be fecking brilliant for us.

I doubt that Levy will pay anything between 12 and 15 million quid for a player of his age.

Fantastic fantastic player but would cost far too much for us.

Would love this but as others have said, unless AVB spikes Levy's drink, not gonna happen.

Imagine Bale and Baines on the left. D.E.A.D.L.Y.

Bale doesn't really play on the left any more but if we had a inside forward who was right footed and Baines overlapping to give us width then that would be very deadly.

Uhm... yeah.

But it would still be an amazing left side, no matter where Bale currently plays.

Do not underestimate the role that Pienaar plays in supporting Baines.

You know it's a shame but I can't help feel we made a mistake with Pienaar. I'm putting down to one of those players who just simply doesn't suit our club but I don't think he was given enough chances either.

I think he would've worked great with AVB's style of play, I think he suffered as Harry was trying to fit him into a 4-4-2 which doesn't really suit it. Shame though.

I think we will be going to a 4-3-3 next season, provided we get a tactical striker. It would be great for Bale to play as a pure winger, cutting in and almost being an inside forward/cf. His numbers could really shoot up.

Levy will never spend the amount of money Everton want for a 27/28 yr old. If Baines was 21/22 then there might be a possibility.

I'm hoping for Shaw or Davies. I can't see us paying the sort of money Everton will want for Baines, in fact I think signing Coentrao is more realistic as he at least will have a large sell on value.

We made a massive mistake. He's been outstanding.
