Kind of gutted that Potter ended up at Chelsea. I wanted him when Conte leaves. I think there are enough hard workers at Chelsea to work for Potter and he will use the younger players more.

For a manager like Potter who's used to finding creative ways to get the best out of his squad, he must be grinning ear to ear thinking about the number of quality players available to him.

Totally agree. I know we can't have our cake and eat it, but I've wanted Potter for ages. If I'm being 100% honest, I'd have to put Conte short term vs Potter long term at 50/50 for me, it's a tough one.

Hopefully we get the best of both worlds where Potter is a bit crap for them and Conte signs a long-term contract here.

I’m confused. I thought he signed for Chelsea…

*Comparative quality to Brighton, if we really want to go down this route. You seriously think they lack quality players? Follow up question - Do you think we have a better squad then them?

I'm disappointed he decided to go tbh. I had this image that he'd stay at least to the end of a season.
I am, too. If the past is any indicator then the Chelsea job will be available in a year or so anyway. Leaving a club that has been shaped around him is a shame, especially so early in the season. Obviously Chelsea is a big job but probably not a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Brighton will probably have to upset some other team now. Maybe Leicester are hoping they go for Rodgers so they don't have to pay the rumoured 10m to fire him.

Do we have a better squad? Absolutely.

Do they lack quality players? That was obviously said tongue in cheek, but they are not significantly more talented than Brighton - right now.

I don’t rate Sterling - too selfish, and not enough quality around him to take advantage of that. City let him go to a “competitor” for a reason. Mount is struggling, ditto Havertz. Ziyech and Pulisic are squad players who lack confidence.

I would probably take Silva over Dier, but that’s close. Chilwell lost his spot to Cucurella, and I’d take Perisic over him.

James is probably the only position where Chelsea have a clear advantage.

I can't agree with this. I think you're being dismissive because of their recent troubles but this Chelsea squad is significantly more talented than Brighton. Bar Christensen, Rudiger & Werner, they have the same players who featured in their 2020/2021 Champions League winning final. That's nothing to scoff at all.

Also, all the reasons you've stated you don't rate their players is down to form and confidence, not quality. There's a reason a large majority of the posts in here are disappointed that Graham Potter is the new manager, we all get the sense that if he's given time to implement his style, same as he did at Ostersund and then Swansea and most recently, Brighton, they'll be a really annoyingly good team.

Managing a team in the top 6 is a different beast to managing a midtable or lower team. You have to be extremely impressive lower down to have any chance at a top club imo. Potter will be another Moyes, Nuno, Rodgers, etc type of manager when faced with the pressures of a top 6 club I think.

Yeah, and I wanted Potter when Conte leaves. Preferably he would have stayed at Brighton or similar instead of ruining his reputation at Chelsea.
I don't get this...how many previous Chelsea manager have ''ruined their reputations' by working there?

I am glad potter is going to try and work with big egos elsewhere. I think the players at Chelsea have way too much power and I doubt they will respect him from the get go. I think he will have to convince them with his knowledge and ideas and get their buy in -it's a massive challenge for him.

Annoyingly, this seems like Chelsea have some long term vision for the first time ever.

None. Which is why I called the job a free hit the other day.

Maybe going back to Di Matteo and AVB but they both found good jobs after Chelsea and were found out to be just not very good at the job.

Looking at their last few managers before Tuchel: Mourinho, Conte, Sarri, Lampard. All found good jobs after Chelsea. Lampard might join the Di Matteo club of just not being very good but the jury's still out on him.

Potter's career will do just fine even if this were to crash and burn.

Exactly, I find that narrative completely nonsensical.
As I said previously, it's one of the biggest jobs in World football and only an idiot would turn it down...it's the sort of job managers dream of having.

Will be interesting to see how much time he gets to work with the players on tactics given the fixture schedule this year.

It's tough enough coming into a new club mid season anyway but to do it when you're playing twice a week every week due to the mid-season WC & Europe it's going to be a whole new world for him and it'll be interesting to see if/how their style changes over the next month or two.
