Maybe a kneejerk thread, but is it just me, or are they really bad?

Adam is slow of body and slow of mind, Henderson I didn't realise was even playing and Lucas is the same nothing players he's always been.

I think they'll gel and will push for a 4-6 placing.
I really don't think their squad could cope with any sort of European competition to deal with though.

Not kneejerk at all. On paper they really aren't a patch on ours. And it was proved on the pitch today.

I think Adam is a good player, but needs to play in the middle of a 5 man midfield. Downing will be good for them as well. Lucas has actually won me over a bit the last season or two, but he's never going to be a "Top 4" standard player. Never been a fan of Henderson. Seems like a poor mans Jenas to me. Don't know how Sunderland managed to get 20 million for him.

They're a bit like us four-five years ago. Average-to-good players in midfield and defence and they're hoping Carroll and Saurez can be as good as the Keane and Berbatov partnership. They will rely on them to win games and paper over the cracks. They're probably a bit more solid than we were too, although it didn't look it today!

Suarez
Downing - Gerrard - Kuyt
Adam - Lucas

I think this would be a strong team. Carroll should not be starting, neither should Henderson. They are both young and promising but at the moment not ready to carry a team.

I would rather have Meireles in a midfield than Adam though. Adams has a great foot but he is sluggish, alot like Huddlestone really.

No I think they are over-rated as a team and not just in midfield.

Adam and Henderson are not top four players, maybe not even top six pedigree.

Downing has had a few good performances but has never been consistent in his career and is not better than anything we have IMO.

Lucas I think is a good player and stands up to be counted for a lot of the time for them. Likewise Kuyt who gets benched and also previously Meireles who they shouldnt have sold. It baffles me that they are sidelining their more consistent players for others who its arguable are inferior but long may it continue.

Carroll is overpriced and should have stayed at Newcastle a bit longer. Suarez is a good player but not as good as some posters on here say he is. I wont even start on there defence although Enrique is a good buy.

They do have Gerrard to come back, but he is nearing the end. I think we can pull clear of them this season despite their greater resources and efforts to improve their squad.

Frankly, they won games with Meireles starting in there, but they couldn't wait to sell him off. Now look what they've got... Lucas is overrated, Adam too... Henderson and Gerard?...

They sold off the wrong CM :violin:

Im glad we didnt sign Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam.

How Henderson and Carroll are worth £55m combined i will never know.

At the minute, I think Carroll ruins their dynamic. I agree with werty where Lucas is concerned and I think Downing would offer more than Bale right now and would be far superior to Lennon.

I can't get my head around this Henderson signing, however. Every time I see him play, he looks so awkward on the ball and seems to be allergic to making a forward pass.

I didn't realise Henderson was playing until about 20 minutes in.
He played? I am genuinely surprised, I was at work so I had some other stuff to do but I did see most of it, and really honestly didn't know Henderson played until I read this thread.

I still cannot believe that Meireles wasn't picked as the number one CM (or number two if we're counting Gerrard), don't blame him for wanting out.

Exactly, I thought second half of the season he was their best player. BAd decision to sideline him and pretty much make him leave.

Lucas is a good player, usually does a good job in front of the defence.

The rest are over rated and or not good/consistent enough, Gerrard will help things but in the grand scheme of things won't change much.

Meireles must have been in Kenny's dog house, when he scored at Arsenal, I'm pretty sure he aimed a middle finger at the bench.

It was actually Suarez who scored from a Meireles assist, and Meireles actually aimed the middle finger at Lucas, later explained as a running gag after Frimpong had shown the finger to Lucas previously in the game.

I really think, and hope if I'm honest, that Gerrard is now on the wane. Wouldn't be surprised to see more and more injuries and less and less match winning contributions from now on.

Seems like ages since he did anything noteworthy as it is, also easy to imagine that years of carrying that shower of shite have taken their toll and he has now shot all of his beans.

Did Carroll cost 35 million pounds? He's not worth 350 pounds on today's showing.
