Reports in Portugal suggest that Spurs will offer Wolfsburg £20m to bring the Brazilian international on board in the upcoming transfer window.

Importantly, however, reports in Germany at the end of last month suggested that the clause only took effect after next summer's World Cup and applies only to a 'big' club.

Gustavo left Bayern Munich last summer in a £16.5m deal to improve his chances of regular first-team football in the lead up to the tournament and only agreed to the move on the grounds that he could leave when it was over.

As such, there are a number of factors that could prevent the former Arsenal target making the move to White Hart Lane in January.

First, it is unclear whether Wolfsburg would accept an offer for the player who they are not required to sell until the summer, although recent comments by sporting director Klaus Allofs suggest the German club have not ruled out a move.

Allofs said: "Even at VfL [Wolfsburg] nobody is unsellable.

"For me it is important that we show [players] that we are willing to negotiate if an offer is made that is reasonable in a sporting sense and also makes good business sense for VfL."

Secondly, it is unclear whether Gustavo would sanction a move to a club like Tottenham which has such strong competition for places given his reasons for moving to Wolfsburg in the first-place.

And finally, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham fits Gustavo's definition of a 'big' club, particularly with the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal also rumoured to be interested.

Wouldn't signing Gustavo suggest that we'd be offloading one or two?
Who would you get rid of Dembele, Sandro, Capoue and Paulinho. Worth noting that Dembele probably wont pass a medical as he is carrying a hip injury

Totally agree, if we need one player, its Koke who is being linked with a move to Liverpool with Atletico replacing him with Mata and De Bruyne

Only seen Koke play once, in the CL recently, so I dont know too much about him tbh (although he seems to be gaining a reputation).

A no for me. Good player but always near a red card. And simply not needed.

If we need one of Wolfsburg, it is clearly Ricardo Rodriguez

I know you're German, so what's your opinion on Rodriguez in terms of ability and potential at full-back? I haven't really seen him but I know he's performed well this season, and I'm wondering how good he is compared to Rose, his strengths and weaknesses compared to Rose and how good a left-back he looks to become.

But Gustavo has played LB for Bayern iirc, but that is still a waste of money

I rarely watch 90 minutes of Wolfsburg and I think only doing that helps you to analyze a player. But he is having indeed a really good season. Defensive solid but also gifted with a great left foot. He takes every corner and most of the free kicks/ penalties as well. Good cross in him and still very young. Last year I had my doubts because of some defensive weaknesses. But he improved and I thnk its not easy to find a better alternative as a LB these days. He should be affordable. Would be good competition for Danny.

DM really is our weak spot isn't it? I'm sure Daniel will be lookinf for at least 2 more. Then we can play 5 holding midfielders behind Soldado finally.

He's the player that Chelsea should be signing. Why the hell would we need him with Sandro and Capoue here already? Makes zero sense.

Rodriguez is quickly becoming one of the best lbs in the world. He has been incredibly consistent and his play seems to only be improving, along with his confidence. He is insanely good at going forward and is very good at defending. He is being compared Roberto Carlos, if that says anything.
