I have such a weird disconnect between the actual, gormless looking Walker we normally see and the one who delivers such charming, bubbly interviews.
Also? 'On a personal note, he’s been great for me and has given me a lot of confidence in my ability.' Gives me a warm glow.
Hi, Kyle. let’s get right down to business: what do you think of Andre Villas-Boas’ clobber?
Ha, ha! I like his suits. He’s a sharp dresser, but normally by the time I get into training he’s already in his tracksuit. He keeps his daywear under wraps from the players.
What changes has he made since he took over from ’arry?
He works a lot more on shape and talks us through exactly how he wants us to play. On a personal note, he’s been great for me and has given me a lot of confidence in my ability. He’s encouraging me to get forward when I can, so hopefully I can contribute down the other end of the pitch a little more.
As a Spurs player, was it hard hearing fans booing so early in the season?
I’ve never been booed off the pitch before, so it’s a learning curve. We’ve brought new faces in and lost a couple of players, so it takes time to gel. But we’re fully behind the gaffer; he’s a top boss who will take Spurs forward.
A lot of new players have arrived over the summer. what have the initiations been like?
At Spurs, it’s traditional for the squad to split into two, get in a line facing each other and make an arch with our arms outstretched above our heads. The new players then have to walk from one end to the other and take all the nips and cuffs to the back of the head that come their way! The new boys have taken it well and like the banter, but it’s not over for them yet –they all still have to sing to us!
Is Grandpa Friedel up to the challenge of keeping his no1 spot?
I wouldn’t call him a grandpa; it’s not like he keeps Werther’s Originals in his glove bag or anything – which is a shame! Despite his age, he’s a top keeper and it’ll be an interesting battle between him and Hugo Lloris for the keeper’s jersey. I get on with Brad. I got to know him when we were at Aston Villa and we often play golf together now.
What’s with all the Mohawks in the team?
They’re taking over the Premier League! I had one when it was “on trend”, but now everyone’s got it, I’ve shaved mine off. Jake Livermore still has one, but he’s added blond tips to it. Each to their own, but a barnet with highlights is not for me!
Who are the chief pranksters at Spurs?
Gareth Bale is always up to something, but I’d say Kyle Naughton and me are Tottenham’s version of the Chuckle Brothers. We’re always playing tricks on the lads, like putting Deep Heat in people’s shorts.
Do you target anyone in particular?
Steve Caulker is an easy target. He’s easy to reel in on any prank as he bites every time!
Speaking of reeling in, will you be joining angling-mad Clint Dempsey for a spot of fishing anytime soon?No way – I’m 22, not 62! There’s no chance of me sitting on a riverbank, getting cold, trying to catch a slimy fish. Fair play if that’s what he likes. Maybe I’ll buy him a goldfish and a bowl and put it in his locker for him!
Finally, you play with a lot of Manchester United players for England. What’s it like to then play against them in the league?
We’re good mates and get on away from the pitch, but when we cross the line at Old Trafford, friendships are put aside for 90 minutes. They’re a quality team and we’ll have to be at our best to bring the points back to London. But we have top players of our own. If we go there and play to our potential, I’m confident we’ll win.
