Lets imagine for a moment we replace our back 4 with "world class defenders".. Pick any 4 you like. Do you think they would regress under Mourinho?
I think this is always the question over Jose. If he has a team full of top players he can succeed. Can he do that with a team like Spurs? It's pretty irrelevant to mention 4 world class defenders because we don't have 1 and wont spend money to get 4. He absolutely needs better defenders because this has to be the worst defence he's ever managed. It's more a question of whether we're a club that can provide those players for a manager like Jose. Otherwise we might be best off with a manager like Poch who will overachieve with lesser players.

I would love Jose in this window to rebuild our defence. However last summer we refused to push the boat out for Skriniar so I can't see anything different this time.

Didn't watch the game but from what I'm reading it sounds like a typical Spurs 2nd half under Mourinho this season?

Exactly what I'm trying to say. It will be interesting to see what a new manager can do with these defenders.

Always feels like Jose sends out 11 players and hopes they perform better than the opponents 11 players, based on ability alone.

A lot of the time this actually works, but is mostly down to having Harry Kane.

Ahead of Lloris (61.9), Kane (60) and Vinicius (50)

Rodon, Ndombele and Hojbjerg all had above 90% as did son and Lamela (100%), but both subs
Thanks.. that's a lot higher than I thought.. he seemed to give the ball away every time I bothered to look up

I agree, and I think the players buy into that bullshit, too. They thinkn they can turn it on for 10 minutes and win.

This. And the Lamela and Son counter. The tactics actually work. The players don't put the chances away. But Jose needs to adapt and doesn't
If your plan requires every player to finish with greater consistency than peak Messi, it's a bad plan.

(I'm not pulling that assertion out of nowhere: the kind of G/xG overperformance you're talking about has never been managed by anyone on a long-term basis.)

Rodon was very good.
Seconds before the equaliser Lamela should have passed to Son.....missed sitter there. That’s his problem, lack of vision and awareness.

The majority of that 70% were 3 yard passes across the back, almost every pass or header longer than that went to Newcastle.

The thing is a more attacking manager would probably do better. You have to play to your strengths but Jose doesn't think that way. Either rebuild the defence that Jose needs to succeed or get a manager who will be brave and attack more. At this moment in time attack is our best form of defence but we don't do that under Jose. Leaving Bale out just shows that he will always prefer a less productive attacking player who tracks back.
