Hmm not sure about that. My opinion is Conte knows well what Lucas offers at RWF and so is using preseason to try him in alternative positions to see how he fares. Lucas is unlikely to be first choice as RWF, but if he offers versatility across multiple positions then he can be a very valuable option from the bench or in rotation for cup games.

Lucas is going to need that versatility to get enough minutes, especially if we're looking at bringing in Zaniolo to compete for attacking positions. Lucas can become our James Milner, he'll work hard for the team whichever position he plays.
Bang on great post.

Yep… high volume dribbler, noticeably left footed, draws lots of fouls, more winger than attacking midfielder though shows potential to play inside, fast and prefers to create chances through dribbling rather than traditional passing/playmaking. Both also need space to run into and are not at their best against a low block.

I will say that, though their archetype is quite similar, they have different instincts… Gil you feel is going to go outside and look to put in a cross, especially on the left; this is supplanted by him having a better cross on him than Nico. On the contrary, Zaniolo loves a shot, gets into the box more, has an innate sense for goal (this makes sense when you consider the physicality differences). Despite Nico’s meager output goal wise he definitely has a better, more powerful shot on him and has displayed good finishing composure, much more than Gil.
Yeah, I think that is a really lazy take from the Twitter guy. They have a lot of differences which you highlighted well.

Players need to go before we can bring in a fresh face
This is perfectly understandable. As things stand we have 4 players who cannot be used in the CL squad and 2 who used be named in the PL squad. Ndombele, Lo Celso, Winks, Reguilon all need to be moved on. I do wonder if we could do a 'loan swap' deal with Roma for Zaniolo and Ndombele.

I know we have to get players out, we can't go into the season with far too many players but do they have to be out the door wearing another shirt before we can complete a new signing, this one for instance? Isn't that the point of the £150m draw down, to facilitate this sort of case? Is there some financial rule that we can't add incoming money to the funds to pay for him? I get the case that if we had nobody to sell we couldn't proceed but we do so can we still not complete this purchase?
Genuinely I don't know.

I mean the majority will go out on loan if nothing else else. I truly expect movement on Lo Celso, Reguilon, Tanganga in the next week or so! Winks and Tanguy I think will be later in the window and Rodon will have suitors.

I agree and have said before, we can’t keep stockpiling non HG players. Need to move out GLC, Ndombele Regullion etc first. That could go deep into august. I guess that’s no problem though if the player we want to bring in isn’t integral to Conte’s opening plans.

Exactly. The core of the squad is there and we can wait for a couple more upgrades.

I guess the more we bloat the squad, the less leverage we have trying to negotiate with buying clubs. We can't run the risk of getting too desperate to offload players, and having to accept bids massively below their market value, or still paying their wages while on loan just to get them out the club.

End of the day, as @Trix keeps stating, our budget is finite so we still need to maximise what we make on outgoings to allow us more flexibility on purchases.

I think the issue will be that if we buy any more players at this time we become desperate to offload as we won’t want to pay players that won’t be registered or can’t be registered to the size of the squad. If that happens clubs will try and take advantage with low ball offers and rightly so

Amazingly, if we can get £55M for the 4 or 5 players we want to offload then we will break even (i.e. Net Spend of zero). We could even turn in a profit! We can afford to offer cut price sales to get their salaries off the wage bill.

Ndombele £10M
Lo Celso £15M
Winks £10M
Reguilon £15M
Rodon £15M

That is on top of already getting £26M for Bergwijn, £6M for CCV and £4M for Clarke.

I figured that was an important point but that's really about timing of the sales, we'd need to get them out soon to avoid that anyway as we've already got too many players. I guess that's why we're concentrating on it now.

I know it's not for here, but I can't see anyone agreeing a fee with us for Ndombele due to his wage demands alone. Sadly I think unless we do an Aurier he'll be on our books until Summer 2025.

I'd be surprised if DL were to let Ndombele go for £10m.
