But there is absolutely no question that Eriksen said he would like to sign a new contract if no club he considered to be "a step up" was interested.

How am I wrong? I said that it was wrong to suggest that Eriksen "only" considered Barca and Real a "step up". Because he'd never said that. As proved by the article you just posted.

Where did he say this?
No - that report contains the first comment as I said. It does not contain anything about "only god tier clubs and signing with Spurs otherwise". Think you've made that up in your head from ITK snippets which you forgot to take with salt.

I´m sorry if I´ve misunderstood you. But I got the notion that you questioned the fact that Eriksen has said that he would sign a new contract with us if a move to RM/Barca/et al didn´t materialise. If that was not what you said or meant, I apologize.

But hopefully other readers in here can benefit from what the original interview and article actually said.

If he leaves for United there has to be more to it than just wanting a new challenge. He must have had a falling out with someone at the club, or they can offer a better release clause to the two Spanish giants, otherwise the move doesn't make sense for him based on what he has ever said about his career aspirations.

I have to be honest, I really respected and loved this man for quite some time. Unfortunately, I feel strongly about the fact that he’s turned into a Danish Modric.

While we’ll have fond memories when we look back, in this current moment, feels like a deep burn and wound.

Levy refused to sell Modric to Chelsea, and Modric went on a strike. The club was able to make a deal with him to stay for the upcoming season. He had his probably best season with us that year, and went to Real Madrid the following summer. For less money than what Chelsea had offered.

Am I too optimistic to pray that Levy & co can do the same again? It would be really bad for us to strengthen an opponent. And it would be easier for most fans to accept Eriksen leaving for an European club. But it´s all about the money I guess ...

Eriksen did the same to Ajax: he was there for several years, didn´t renew his contract and we could pick him up for peanuts. What is slightly baffling is that Eriksen is the kind of talent that would/could be sol to almost any club for a big fee; I can´t get my head around that he and his agent would have to force their way out on a cheap? Do they have this little confidence in his value?

It's the "et al" which is the sticking point.

We all thought/hoped that meant only Real/Barca. But that was just us imputing our wants onto what we think Eriksen meant.

I'm afraid anyone thinking being asked to be part of the revival of Manchester United - the biggest club in the World - isn't somehow a "step up" from Spurs is just us deluding ourselves.

I just hope the reports are wrong and he doesn't want to go there for whatever reasons. But I do think it's about time fans stop finding ever more creative ways to make it look like Christian Eriksen is some Sol Campbell type prick. It's fake news. And a little embarrassing and small club mentality.

Could possibly be forcing the move out on the cheap to get a much bigger signing bonus?

I don’t get it on any level why Eriksen wants to leave us for United.

They have a shit coach in charge, a clueless executive, have loads of overpaid underperforming players and loads of overated English talent.

Eriksen will go from assisting Kane to assisting Rashford. Good luck with that.

Yes they will pay him well but surely not that much considerably more than we would.

He’s also basically moving to a rival in the league to play europa league football.

I’ll be honest and say I’m happy to get rid now. People will know that I was criticising him throughout last season for his poor performances so I can’t be a hypocrite now. Yes I’d rather he signed a new contract because he’s a quality player when on song and I don’t like to see us weaken the squad but last season he was abysmal and his pathetic showing in the CL final showed to me that he simply isn’t an elite level player.

There is a good reason no top clubs are busting down the door to sign him.

If we were to sign GLC and BF and lose Eriksen I’d be happy. Hopefully we can be a bit more dynamic in attack rather than the slow tepid stuff we had most of last season.

The only downside is why it had to be United, if we can shift him abroad it’s a win win IMO.

I don’t think he WANTS to leave us for Man U. It’s just that he wants a new challenge and the expected bid from Madrid hasn’t arrived. Yes he could wait until the end of the euro window but it’s no good for us as we need to know if to replace him before Thursday.

I highly doubt he has had a falling out with anyone. If United were to put a release clause in his contract it's going to be for a lot more than what a club could get him for now.

According to the Danish media Ekstra Bladet's 'sources', it is likely that the rumours of Eriksen to United have been pushed forward by his agent Martin Schoots in order to accelerate interest from foreign clubs.

Definitely plausible

I think its possible Eriksens agent is playing the games, as the story first emerged from AS In Spain, of all places.

I'd bloody love us to string Utd along until the deadline, secure Fernandes (or whoever that Utd might also want), then sell Eriksen abroad, leaving Utd with fuck all.

I totally agree that ManUtd is a "bigger club" than us. They´re probably the biggest, or at least the top three-four clubs in the world if one look at it from a brand point of view. They´re certainly among the top 2-3 when it comes to richest.

I´ve followed Eriksen since he was a teenager, and Danish football since the early 80s (even though I´m not Danish). Eriksen is a player in the mold of Alan Simonsen and the Laudrup brothers, and one has to know a bit about the Danish "football psyche". Danish football has always (at least until recent years) been about the beautiful game, in the line of Brazil and France of old. And Spurs to some extent: we too have always been the odd club out compared to the "boring Arsenal" and trophy machines like Liverpool of the 70-80s and ManUtd under SAF. We used to be the club with the Hoddles and Ardilleses and Waddles and later Gazza and Ginola: technically skilled players who played with panache and style. Eriksen fits in that storyline. I truly believe it has been his lifelong dream or goal to play at RM or Barca (like M. Laudrup and Simonsen), or maybe Juventus (like M. Laudrup again, Zidane, Platini, etc). I think he´s a dying breed of footbal romantics and one of the last 10s as modern football is evolving. I honestly don´t see ManUtd being the destination of his heart.

BUT: I don´t know. I have never met or spoken with Eriksen, and I cannot say this or that about what he really is or what he wants. None of us can, really. But I´m making an educated guess based on my knowledge of the football culture he comes from, and how he´s been handling his career so far as well as old interviews from way back (please don´t ask me to find them!).

I 100% agree with you: Eriksen is no Campbell.

Behind a paywall, but goes against what we’ve been hearing.

If that's true then I just can't see him leaving before our window shuts.

If he does leave it'll be at the end of the month and we'll be screwed cos there's no way Levy will sign 2 replacements before he's found a definite buyer.
