Let's be realistic here; we aren't going to win the league, regardless of who we sign.

I'm more than happy with the loan with option/obligation depending on appearances. If he steps up and is amazing then it works out well for us, if not then it's just 1 year. He was a promising player not that long ago, a new change of scenery and manager might bring that out in him again

We are not going to win the league as much as we all hope. There is no point in spending millions on players that may or may not be better than Davies, when for sure our primary targets will be available next season.
Loaning a player is a good option to add squad depth instead of wasting money just because it’s there to be spent.

Sorry dude, we are gonna win the league next season.

(I think the OP meant we are going for the league but to do that we can't afford stop gaps?)

Why would this be any different then?
There are two types of loan signings IMO with different reasons where:

1. The structure of a deal is to ease cashflow constraints on the buying club where they want to sign permanently but can't afford to pay the cash upfront. We actively wanted Romero and Kulasevski and I bet you that both got good wage increases to sign for Spurs. Romero was voted the leagues best defender and a number of clubs courted him. Kulasevski is young and extremely talented and Juve know it was a gamble to let him go.

2. In the case of Lenglet Barcelona are actively trying to get him off the payroll because to be fair to him he has been extremely poor playing for them. They will subsidise his wages to another club to ease their financial burden.

Technically there is no difference but the sentiment IMO why a club wants to Sell / Loan a player are extremely different.

It is this type of player that I describe in 2. that i do not want where their form has dipped over a longer period of time not just temporarily and as I say NDombele is the prime example.

Hope he is one of Fabios distractions and not a priority. Never seen him prior to Barca, but struggled there every time I watched them.

Be interesting if we end up with him and Bremer, would probably end up with both for around €40 mil. If that’s the case one wonders if we are making that move as other more expensive players have become available in the other two positions we are needing.

There is nothing sensible about Lenglet coming in even if it was for free. He won't be an improvement on what we have or not even on a par with what we have. I thought the point in signings was to improve the squad but this one if it were to happen doesn't do that.
There are bound to be far better options out there for LCB.

A back 5 of Lloris, Spence, Bremer, Romero, Lenglet and Perisic looks pretty solid to me
With only one of them playing a minute of Premier league football.

Any new member of the back 5 will need time bedding in in my opinion, especially if they replace Dier
