How were they the problem tonight? The two people who had fuck all to do with the goal we conceded. All our issues came down the left.
err, Davinson is the rotation on Dier. any cut that happens to Dier's right he holds responsability in containing. in that play especially, he had no other threat to take into consideration but took 2 seconds too long to narrow the backline. he needs to make the reduction as soon as the ball is out for a throw in our own half and especially so when the ball gets to Antonio inside the area matched up with Dier. as said before, not the only responsible for the goal, but a big part of it.

also, what is up with reducing the game to goals? even if he wasn't involved in the goal whatsoever, he could have still played a poor game.

He could have done better sure but a big part of it? No not for me, Not when a goalkeeper boots the ball needlessly out for a throw, a defender doesn't even face the throw in, Dier gets evicerated with ease by Antonio because he's not prepared for the throw and is caught on his heels as he's too busy pointing, Bissouma fails to be correctly positioned between the two west ham players and Hojbjerg fails to track the runner after starting the whole debacle with the stupidity with his boot.

What's up is I'm bored not only of our backup cb being blamed for the situation, not only in the context of a suggestion about Lenglet needing to come in for his progression where clearly, the player he replaces is Davies due to the specifics of what Lenglet is but also within the context of the performance of other players being poor yet once again it's the guy whose filling in getting the blame.

On the topic of how he could have possibly played a poor game, he had a significantly better game than most and whoscored backs that assertion up but once again people can't help but have a pop at the defender who we know has limitations to his game hence why his role is to fill in when there's injuries. Why it can't be accepted that he's an understudy to Romero I don't know but he has absolutely nothing to do with Lenglet getting an opportunity does he. Neither does Emerson.

gonna be honest, I rewatched the play just now and I tend to agree with you. Davinson actually doesn't have much time to make the reduction. he was still a bit tentative but he also had Benrahma to account for on the backside since Emerson was still recovering off the offensive alignment. on the defensive side of the play (because it all started with errors in possession, it is a transition goal after all even though it comes off a throw in) those 3 you mentioned are in better position and have better conditions to make an impact on the play.

Biggest issue with the goal was PEH checked out and didn’t do his job.

They’ll give it away because they actually try to take on risky forward passes to break the lines. Dier done it multiple times in the first half. Emerson and Sanchez just go side ways to each other or 5yards into a midfielder
But they are terrible at it and just give the ball away thus putting pressure on the defence again basically a vicious circle.. Dier especially tries to play balls way above his ability in my view.

Appreciate the response yeah, it was quite frustrating just how many players were not doing their job and dropped concentration because the way we play we can't afford such switch off's. We cannot go toe to toe with Liverpool and City but we can amass results and bridge the gap by having high standards and playing a more pragmatic system which is built on a foundation of making sure we limit risk compared to Liverpool and City who push high and believe their quality outweighs the risk of highline, so when I see a goal conceded in the manner it was with so many players culpable, it's these sort of things that make me think we are still too mentally naïve.

I really appreciate you took the time though to go back and check it out rather than us just stay staunch in our views, I have a lot of respect for that and to be honest really want to highlight it because it's so rare in this day and age. I think my tone at the time of those posts was that of a very frustrated person because I really wish Sanchez was viewed as what he is, a limited defender but a fantastic level for somebody who is sitting on our bench and if he wasn't limited or didn't make the odd mistake then we wouldn't be as fortunate as there's no way he'd settle for the bench and I have been a bit exasperated recently that a lot of people don't seem to accept him for what he is. If he was starting every week then I'd be saying let's upgrade him but for me although Davies and Dier have been fantastic since Conte came in, I do believe that both can be upgraded in the future and the goal should be that they then become the players who are the back ups and then yes maybe cash in on Sanchez having a player like Dier who can play CCB/RCB and that's how you elevate the squad level. You don't elevate the team by spending large amounts of money to find a player marginally better than Sanchez whose role will be to be a backup for Romero when there's still Davies you can upgrade on, Hojbjerg you can upgrade on, Eventually Dier or adding a backup to Kulusevki or adding a different type of attacking midfielder. The CB who will most likely not play 10 games in the prem this season is not where the resources for upgrades need to be focused imo.

Very very good. So nice to be able to play out of the back with confidence. Adds so much to our game. Hoping he gets a lot of minutes in the next few months.

Looks much more comfortable in possession of the ball than Davies. Defensively, not tested too much but did what he had to do.

Yet to be seen how he does defensively, but his performance on the ball was so good today. So assured and always moving the ball forwards. Set up one of our best chances with a fizzed ball in behind.

You can see how vital three CB's that comfortable with the ball at their feet is for Contes system. Granted, Fulham was abysmal for most of the match but we beat their press with such ease today with Romero, Dier, Lenglet (+ Bentancur back) that I believe West Ham would have proven to be less of a hassle with this line-up.

Its easier when the opposition arent pressing you, Fulham sat off us so we had more opportunities with the ball. Id rather see him tested but still would play Davies if we are playing say Man City next weekend.

He looked composed with the ball and did work well with the defence but too soon to tell much.
