Going against the grain here, but it seems a bit of an overreaction on here about Spence.

Doherty was excellent before his injury and Emerson was improving dramatically towards the end of the season (in his first season in the pl). I can see why we'd be interested in Spence as he can offer something different (and yes hg) but it's not that important.

I mean if you compare him to the caliber of signings so far he is at the bottom, even below Forster at the moment.

Unless he absolutely explodes on to the scene, I can't see him being first team for a while.

What worries me much more is the centre back and left centre back positions. One injury to Davies and we are in trouble, an injury to dier (history of injury issues) and it could derail our season.

And we're only negotiating with him? As our ITK's have said a few times, there are other options we have. This was just the one that I suppose seemed gettable from the start (I mean Boro clearly do not want him). Unfortunately it's not seemed to pan out that way and we keep getting close but then an issue appears.

Impossible to say if we’re actively negotiating for other right backs but Spence was almost certainly the one we went for first and since we haven’t moved on despite being played by Gibson suggests we really want him.

I mean we want him, sure. But doesn't mean he's like the only one that Conte wants and the only person we could ever want for RWB.

I just don't agree that he's the 'one' that Conte wants, as if Conte only sees one possible player to be our RWB.

He's on the list, high on it. Sure. But the list isn't just Spence.

If he is the one Conte really wants then back him, stop fucking about and just pay an extra few mill, get him in so we can focus on other deals.

I guess this is the question no-one really knows the answer to. I'm assuming now we've moved on that there isn't a massive clamour for him from Conte, otherwise it would be a very dumb move to walk away.

This has been my thinking from the start.
Spence or Hakimi? Which fits Conte's remit? Hakimi everytime.
Itk tell us, Levy taken back step, it's all Conte... I'm not so sure tbh. If was Conte choosing only Kane, Son and Cuti would be his choices. Perisic and Bissouma are Conte players, he wouldn't sweat a reserve keeper choice imo and Richarlison is quality addition to any squad. But, LCB and RWB were, we were led to believe priorities for Conte. Haven't landed either??

I’m amazed this has dragged on so long. He’s a player with potential but he’s still very raw (i.e. Sess).

It’s hard to imagine Conte wants him that bad.

My feeling is he struggles to usurp Doherty this season if signed.

Also it is not about "paying the extra required" as if i remember correctly the fee is not the major sticking point but the addons etc. Was something like extra when he plays x amount of CL and PL games as well as a large sell on %.
We are looking at Spence due to being home grown, his potential and the good season he had in the championship.
Also he has certain attributes that Conte is looking for in the RWB postion (pace, ball control , athleticism etc) but needs to work on other aspects such as crossing and possibly decision making.
Conte can work with him but we have a cut off point in mind when it comes to intial fee and any addons they are trying to get away with. It gets to a point where price outweighs the risk on potential and going after an established player in same psoition.
FP and AC are speaking constantly and probably have many options drawn up in the event certain targets are unobtainabledue to the mainy issues that could arise during negotiantions.
This is the one transfer window that i believe we actually have a plan in place and multiple options which i think is acting more like a big club than just paying over the odds or being shafted with addons etc just to get a player from another team.
We have also proved that we will spend on a player just look at Richarlison, i believe the fact that we got Bissouma for around £25m plus addons as well as the free signings have allowed us to spend that extra bit to get him in.

We don't know if he was first choice or not, but was a choice we thought was doable and has progressed this far.

I mean for all we know (as everyone seems to love bringing him up) Hakimi was first choice and we just got a big fat no straight off the bat.

Not at all. Williams has played for Liverpool, younger, now a regular at International level and was very good for the champions of the same league.

So at £16m, Spence shouldn't be anymore either.

He might not be THE ONE that Conte wants, though. He might be one with the right attributes that Conte wants. And for the club, Spence has the right attributes and is HG.
