Player Watch: Emerson Royal

As a brazilian who had the displeasure of watching Emerson Royal in our olympic national squad, i can't describe the ineptitude of Tottenham scouting system.

The lad was selected at the time due to his physical profile, clearly lacking in the other areas. In most of Brazil's youth squad matches you could see that he was the weak link.

In grown man football he lost the physical leaverage, exposing even more the atrocious footballer he always were.

Walker, then Trippier, then Walker Peters and Aurier all gone and being left with Doherty and Emerson.

It's like every season we get a downgrade at RB. Crazy we let an academy prospect go to pay double for a guy who can't cross or take a man on

All are shit or deemed shit except Walker and there was really nothing we could do to keep him

Should sell this Summer. He is only a year into his contract, 23-years-old and a Brazil international, so will still have some value and La Liga teams may be interested. If we could recoup £12/15m with addons that would be good.

So many good homegrown RBs in the championship too.

not what we needed, i think he can be quite a decent pure defender in time but obviously we need an attacker there in that position. But he wasn't bought for Conte so i can understand what happened with this one

Despite his age, i'd rather we sold him over Doherty now. Both should go ideally but can't see us bringing in two right backs so we will need to make do with Doherty as a back up, who is in fairness improving in his favoured role.

We have 100m pair of midfielders surplus to requirements here and a 25-30m rwb who isnt a footballer. I mean what a waste of money all that is. We will recoupe some of that back but cant imagine we get anywhere close to that back.

I doubt he was scouted. It would have been an agent pushing him our way because we needed a right back. I bet we didn’t even go watch him live him once. We were desperate because Aurier wanted to leave so we took him.

I wasn’t a huge Aurier fan but we’ve given him and KWP away for next to nothing and spent nearly £40m on Doherty and Emerson to replace them . I’m not sure u could make it up .

I kind of think similiar although it would be absolutely shocking to not scout a new player at all when you are about to spend 25m.

I'd never heard of Emerson when we signed him and had never seen him play either. I presumed he was decent because he came from Barcelona. I assume this is pretty similar, if not identical to our scouting of him.

One of the main advantages of having a proper director of football is that we can have a philosophy that defines how we play. This means we can change managers without a dramatic upheaval required. I get that when someone like Conte becomes available you have to be flexible, but I don't get why we'd sign a defensive full back with almost zero attacking ability just for Nuno, given that most other managers won't want that.

Furthermore, the talk was that Nuno was convinced to play a back 4 because Spurs fans demand attacking football (obviously not the system that brought him success at Wolves). So who the fuck decided to sign the most limited right back around who contributes in no way whatsoever to attacking football? It makes so little sense. No team plays entertaining football without attacking full backs.

its hard to tell, i mean he wouldve been fine for jose too, as a defensive full back that allows reggie to push on in the lobsided thing he likes. but you're right the DoF should create the style of the team
