Gareth just scored the equalizer to tie the game in extra-time in the MLS Cup (the playoffs final). LA won on penalties to win the league. He always pops up big in cup finals.

One of the best. His last season in our colours before he went to Madrid was just absolutely ridiculous.

Shame he never got a proper homecoming.

What a career. Weird seeing him retire after all these years after seeing his spurs debut. Time flies!

Absolute legend. Still my favourite to put on the Lilywhites. I’m still very bitter about his season long return, it could have been magical.

No surprise really, always seemed after the world cup he would have nothing left. He's won it all with Madrid and now lead Wales to a world cup. Shame he didn't do much on that stage but for a penalty, but they were never going to go far.

What a legend he was and a great career. Its just a shame he's yet another great who didn't win anything with us. Another example of a player who we didn't take the opportunity to build a title winning team around.

Most exciting player I’ve ever seen play for us. When he hit his stride he was unreal. So lucky to see him in our colours.

I can honestly remember and recite so many of his goals off the top of my head. One of the greatest players to ever wear our shirt.

Aaand it’s over, he’s retired

I wasn't expecting to get a bit choked up reading that.

What an absolutely phenomenal player. Will never forget the final two seasons with us, his overhead in a Champions League final, nor his trolling of the scummy Madrid fans.

If Ryan Mason replies to that tweet, I'm going in...

Probably my favourite Spurs player. I remember him lighting up White Heart Lane. Some of the goals he scored were nothing short of incredible. Shame we couldn't mach his ambition at the time but what he achieved at RM grants him legend status. Pity injuries have effected his career so much.

Really happy he's going out when he's had enough. No holding on for paychecks (cough Ronaldo), just go and spend time with your family, play loads of golf and leave us all with an untainted memory of one of the greatest talents to every play the game.
