I’ve not seen evidence he can cover the 10 spot, he is too vertical in his play and does not embrace a freedom of movement that madders does ( and is needed for a central attacking midfielder) and I was never convinced when he was a wide attacker. However, as an 8 I think he others lots.

he’s industrious, good technical ability, attack minded, can contribute (but not lead in our system) to attacks, and can get a challenge in.

Unless we face an opponent who is going to come at us he shouldn’t play with more than one of Biss/bentancur/PEH/skipp, does mean we need to find a good backup for Maddison though

He doesn't press as high as Maddison and doesn't dribble as well either. We miss that a lot at home. He's good at keeping the ball moving and plays some nice threaded balls through. He had a good first half but faded 2nd half so I could understand him coming off. It would have been nice to bring Donley on for him though.

I don’t think there’s many 10s in the world who have Maddisons dribbling though. Even ode can’t dribble like maddison,
There was still 3 big chances created bio Gio in that game, the biggest one being his slid Johnson in and Johnson did a very poor shot. Gio could easily have had a bunch of assists in those 3 games

…and for me at least this is absolutely fair enough.

I have a view of Gio where I think, has he been great these last few games? I certainly think he’s been good and added something, especially against Villa. However he’s also been here a number of seasons now, and no he hasn’t had an extended run in the team in his favoured position and that’s fair in terms of saying he needs that opportunity, however he DOES need to show something of a decent level over a consistent period before people start thinking he’s 100% worth keeping.

I’m not directing it at you, but there’s an odd thing on this board where it’s either you love the player or hate the player. A decent performance is heralded as a player finally proving all their doubters wrong and silencing critics. Equally a couple of errors and they’re straight in the bin.

Personally I think there’s a talented player in Gio, but I want to see him show that over a longer period of time and with some consistency before I feel he’s been worth the outlay and that he’s a premier league player. Though I’m also willing to give him the time required in his favoured position to demonstrate this.

People look at things too black and white. We have been starting games well, taking the lead, then losing when we don't have the strength from the bench to replace the tired legs.

Maybe starting all your best players isn't the way forward? Maybe Lo Celso is better for us at the moment coming from the bench? It's a team game not a first XI game.

Playing with PEH and Skipp is a challenge for the best midfielders when trying to transition to attack. I thought he did alright having to try and work with them.

Quite a few of them were today to be fair but I’ve noticed he’s done this quite often, against City he fell over when trying a switch pass too.

Could well need some good old fashioned big studs let’s do a go fund me page to buy him a pair of old skool Adidas World Cup studded boots ⚽️
