Especially when he’s obviously been tee’d up in front of an open goal with the keeper and defenders all outside the box! 😋

POK mentioned his name first when he said we pulled away from
Raya… even others have confirmed nobody knew of this deal before POK

I don't know this bloke, never seen him play so i cannot comment on his ability but i was watching a video from 'Tottenham Walks' the other day when he was using a scouting program to look at how good David Raya was (think he called it Why Scout, or Y scout ?). Anyway, it scouts everyone from the top 5 leagues and can then rate them on various attributes and he was banging in different parameters that you'd expect an Ange goalkeeper to need - good at short passing, quick off his line etc to make a list of the top % of these goalkeepers.

As each parameter was added the list obviously shortened, but while Raya was always in the top 3, so was this other unknown keeper....from Empoli. Now i'm not 100/% sure where it finished up, but i'm pretty certain that when all the data was collated Raya and Vicario were 1st and 2nd in a list of about 3 or 4 keepers who's attributes fitted the required profile.

So all i will say on him is that a lot of our fans have (rightly) praised Brighton and Brentford for the data driven transfers and had hoped we'd do the same 'smart' recruiting. From what i saw, the data on Vicario was as good as Raya in most areas, slightly better in some , slightly worse in others. So for the money quoted , it would look to be a very sensible option given that he's roughly the same as Raya on data, but a year younger and less than half the price.

Lets see where this one goes but i wouldn't be writing him off just 'cos he's cheap !

If it's the same video I've watched, the couple of keepers that get a mention outside of Raya when all the metrics are plugged in are Emi Martinez, Ledesma at Cadiz, Rulli from Ajax and Milinković-Savić from Torino. Don't think Vicario was mentioned at all in the video.

I'm sure I'll get neg repped for this but this transfer is giving me Gollini vibes.

Can anyone reassure me (with reasoning) that I'm wrong to think this?

Has he recommended him based on budget restraints or he sees him as the best possible option?
Who cares if he’s cheaper than another keeper. The fact that our chief scouts has identified him and our manager is on board with it should be all that matters.

This is not meant personally towards you but I really don’t get why people are trying to turn everything into a negative situation. Don’t get me wrong, if our ITKs all came out and said this was Levy pulling rank to sign against the wishes of the scouts and manager, then we have every right to criticise.

anyway, I’ll reserve judgment on how good or poor he’s been once he’s played a season for us, until then - great it looks like we’re signing a keeper.

Its almost like people don't trust that our scouts would scout a player and take in to account whether he'd be a good fit in the prem! Some of the best keepers in the league came from outside the league!!!
Yeah it is a weird take just because he is not in the prem already. Lloris was not in the prem when we signed him, Ederson wasn't, Alisson wasn't and so on and on.

These updates are starting to give the vibe of...

"We're about to do it Brentford..."

"Submitting our official offer soon Brentford..."

"Okay, here we go, about to submit our offer Brentford..."

"Any moment now, Brentford..."

"How about £25m for Raya?"

I kind of appreciate we are trying to buy smarter like brighton, brentford etc but the difference is they HAVE to do that, we have the luxury of money

I think Raya is the clearly better keeper, spend the money
I’ve not seen the Vicario enough to comment. It’ll be great to know why you think Raya is clearly a better keeper?

This is a critical position where we are replacing a world cup winning captain.

Surely you go premier league proven when it is available?

All this data led stuff is great but with all respect we are not Brighton or Brentford.

We are the 3rd most profitable sports team in the world! I am waiting for the day when we actually act like it, sign some players that our rivals would want and take us to the next level.

Arsenal are trying to sign Declan Rice for 90mil, we are praying Newcastle don't beat us to Maddison and looking at a load of unknowns again.

The forum do a stellar job of convincing everyone they are great but 90% of the time they are average at best, not the required quality and we struggle to shift them.
Good enough for Man City and Liverpool to bring in non premier league keepers. Could easily be argued the best keepers around are actually not currently in the EPL, there are a few keepers outside the EPL arguably far better than Raya.

Raya looked like a good fit but even he’s got his shortcomings and if we’ve identified a better option at half the price then fantastic. I’m no expert on Italian football but Vicario looks like a top talent. I struggle with the perceived vision of Levy scouring the world looking for look a like cheap alternatives, this guy has been scouted and vetted.

other than his nationality, in what way is it at all similar? gollini was never rated in top 3 of Serie A keepers, was only brought in on loan and not seen as being an immediate number 1.

Oh bugger ! So i watched a video last night where the same guy was saying that Vicario came out almost identical to Raya on his scouting tool, and i remember watching the original video of him using the scouting tool for Raya when an unknown goalie kept getting highly ranked......and i put 2 + 2 together !!!!!

Is there an 'idiot' rating on here i could give myself ?

In an effort to redeem myself , here is a video from the Italian Football Podcast , made 2 months ago, where they are discussing Vicario - very positively !

Buffon on Vicario: "He might become even better than me, he's generational".

However Buffon described Vicario as "extraordinary" and he said that he's "the future of the national team".

That sounds positive...

I don't care what he costs and I have no idea about him as a player. He may be there best option available for all I know. I was making a point that he may be their choice but within the given budget. They may have preferred someone else but couldn't stretch the budget to fit.

I think a combination of data driven and being ruthless in getting the best players is what we should be.

I agree about the Brighton and Brentford model. Why would I wanna copy them? We have spent two decades waiting for a stadium to compete and now it's here some people have convinced themselves we couldn't possibly do so and have to do it on the cheap. That's nonsense considering facilities and prices they charge.

But that doesn't mean to say we shouldn't be smart. So if this lad means we can go big on Maddison and a centre back and have money left over for a couple of more shrewd unknown signings then that it is really smart I think.

There is no comparison TBH, its only because they are both Italian. Vicario would be an excellent signing IMO.

This has already been posted but instead of me explaining why I think he'd be good you may as well listen to this.

On a side note, his insane reaction saves will make the fans fall in love with him in no time IMO. If you ever watched Gollazo Live on Sundays they would often rave about him and show clips of his latests wonder saves.
