Was does he keep starting him ? Why not give Lo Celso a go ? Maddison needs to feel the pressure of someone wanting his place in the team.

Oo I dunno about that mate he’s picked many a beautiful pass over the years and for us and England I think saying his vision isn’t great is a bit harsh
Yea he’s certainly got the ability. He’s the one you will expect to pick out our runners but there were multiple runs made by Werner and Son last night completely ignored again similar to the last couple of games. He’s holding on to the ball too long making meaningless turns in the middle of the park that ended up with the ball going back to our CB. He should and needs to be doing better.

Lo Celso and PEH are most likely off on the summer.

They won't be starting many games over Maddison and Biss

I, unfortunately, think he is going to be one of the big names to miss out on the Euros squad.

Maddison's been woefully out of form since coming back IMO. Often picking overly difficult passes over the simple, efficient ones to get the team ticking and taking too many touches in the middle of the park. Not to mention the number of loose, misplaced passes in general.

Not sure what's going on inside his head as he's looked irritable on the pitch for a while now. Can't remember the last time I saw him smiling on the pitch during a game.

It's probably an unpopular opinion on here but on current form I don't think there's space for him in the squad. Bellingham and Foden are clearly ahead of him and Palmer is currently in much better form.

I agree. Makes more sense to have Foden & Palmer as back ups for a Bellingham as well as being options out wide.
Maddison’s form is pretty poor too so he’s not giving Southgate a difficult decision at the moment. If he can get back to his early season levels over the last 7 games, then maybe.

I think he has this in the back of his mind and is trying too hard to show what he can do, trying to make every touch into a defense splitting pass, holding the ball too long for the opening.

There is probably a fitness/match sharpness issue but I also feel like there might be a little bit of him feeling like he’s undroppable. Which he is for Ange it seems. To me that is never a good thing, no player should feel like they are always guaranteed a spot. Idk maybe the amount of praise he got from the first half of the season caused him to be a little too relaxed or maybe it is just as simple as him not feeling 100% physically comfortable. Hard to tell.

In General it seems to take him more time to decide what to do with the ball which didn’t feel like the case at the start of the season. His passing in general is a lot looser than it used to be. That is obviously amplified by Gio whos game in general is more revolved around fast one touch passes to open up gaps.

I’m not particularly worried at all tho as it’s fairly common for a player’s form to dip during a season and he was playing at an extremely high level at the start. It was always going to be hard to maintain that level especially with his injuries but there is no reason he can’t get back to it. That being said I do think it might be worth starting him from the bench for a match or two to see if that pushes him to up his game.

It’s a shame Ange doesn’t seem trust Gio enough to start him over Maddison as I would say based on both of their current forms he deserves it. I just hope over summer we bring in a AM who Ange will trust to regularly rotate with Maddison if his form where to dip again.

Would be far from the worst player to come off the bench to try and impact the game too.

I have to say though that based on his current form, when I ask myself what we would miss if he were not to start for us, I'm not sure the list is too long...

It sounds like I'm defending him as I said he should start today's game because he was promising against West Ham, and he was poor. And I again have the view that I would maybe say starting him against Newcastle may not be the worst idea as I think it may be the type of game that would allow him to be more influential. Open, lots of space to play into, a team that won't sit back etc.

Gio does just look that much sharper and quicker to play out. Like @Jamturk said, Maddison can at times take too many touches. Twist one way, twist the other, only to twist back once again to play the pass that he should have played before twisting the first time. I respect that he wants to do more on the ball than just play the simple pass, but it's all just taking a bit too long at present.

Starting to get a bit narked off with him. Two weeks in a row he should've been off because of stupid petulant actions - the sort of shit we thought he'd moved past. Needs dropping.

When u think of players in his position at other teams he offers very little , even in a poor man Utd team , Bruno comes up with something more often than not , look at odergard , Bernardo silva , they are head and shoulders above him , why doesn’t he shoot anymore , always wants to take an extra touch or turn . Such a disappointment.

Yeah, was doing his Scotty Parker impression again today too.

He plays like he thinks the camera is constantly on him. His little strut, every turn or check is really exaggerated, quite a distinct motion when he passes. Quite a theatrical player.

He was the heartbeat of the team earlier this year and most good things came via him. But he’s been way off recently.

Personally, don’t think he has the character or attitude. Constantly giving off and rolling around.

Has talent but he gives up easily.

Lo Celso has 50 caps for Argentina and sits on bench, bizzare

It’s not just a Maddison thing, our front three and midfield are devoid of movement. You could see how frustrated GLC looked coming on and looking for people to move into space but we were a team of statues.
