Player Watch: Moussa Sissoko

I think Jose is quite happy for Sissoko to not want the ball. When we have possession Jose will have told him to get ready for when we lose it and be ready to stop a quick transition. It sacrifices a player offensively to give us insurance defensively. Makes us woeful to build attacks but means we proactively defend / manage space when we lose possession. Just watch him when we have the ball and specifically when we lose the ball. That is why Jose has been picking him.

The last game against Manchester City, which we won very well 2-0. We played with Winks 6, Gio 8, Alli 10. I don't see why Sissoko is so fundamental. Gio of 8 and Tanguy of 10 would be a show.
In that game we had 30% possession and 3 shots to their 25. We had our first shot on target when they went to 10 men.

That is a terrible example of the point you are trying to make, we play that game another 10 times, we would lose it 9 and a half.

It's a real conundrum with Sissoko. As good as he is athletically, he is as bad with the ball at his feet, and he no longer makes bursting runs forward like he was doing last year before injury. I can see why Jose rates him so highly, but he has got to be the position we look to upgrade next.

You are right, but with Sissoko we would play 10 and lose 10. I just think that Moussa is a good player for some games, he is very athletic but he is very clumsy and does not help Tanguy.

Yeah, I was about to say that was not a sustainable way to victory. They absolutely dominated us.

It’s horrible as he’s aesthetically one of the worst footballers ever to watch with the ball at his feet unless he’s at 100mph surging forward but in the games he starts we do always look more solid!

I believe Moussa has now made approx. 171 appearances for Spurs in all competitions so basically a lot of fans here are saying Poch and Jose have no idea what they are doing when they select a football team ??????

I can see what you mean.

I think for me it's nearly every game I see, I can't quite believe how poor he is with the ball at his feet. Its like the ball is a Toblerone. For a midfielder, some level of comfort on the ball should be a given.

That said....he gives his all for the team so I can't fault that.

I’m not his biggest fan, as I’ve said numerous times on here, but I can actually see why he’s in the team and what his role is for us at the moment. I would much rather see Gio and Ndombele in there with Hojbjerg, but Sissoko is the ‘insurance’ player - the safe option. And at the moment that is working. I think as Gio’s fitness gets back up, we could see him and TNd start together, and from there we’ll see how that goes. Also, if we’re looking for this ‘insurance’ player in there, Sissoko is definitely upgradable in the near future. There are better options out there, but at the moment, he’s doing his job, so fair play to him.

You would think with football being your job, the basic or controlling, passing and shooting the ball better than Sunday League players would be the bare minimum.... Some how he has never made strides with the ball at his feet. I find that really odd.
But he does do a job of being the athletic beast to give some steel in the midfield.

Moussa Sissoko might be one of the worst players to play for spurs in the last 30 years. You can watch a game and easily pull out 10 clips of when he offensively is in the wrong position, takes a rubbish touch or just completely breaks our flow of the game because a combination of the 2. He straight up is worse than a deadweight in possession because his technical inabilities, no other team in the top 4 would have carried a player like this for the last 4 or 5 years.

Then in defence ive never seen someone who is meant to be a strong physical presence refuse to jump at corners and free kicks to challenge a header (Which has already cost goals this year). He is weak in the tackle and as someone mentioned seems to have lost a yard of pace so he now is struggling to even chase down the player. I think he is a great guy, everyone seems to love him. But he cannot play if we are aiming to be a big competitor in the big competitions. I think mourinho though has no one else and I think our first order of business will be another midfielder. ASAP

on top of that France always seem to pick him, I honestly think it’s just for what he will do for the team without the ball he will die for them but once his power and pace goes he’s going to go downhill so fast

Or maybe most fans understand why he’s being picked but would prefer us to find a system/ style where picking him is not necessary.

I can see why managers like to pick him. If you were playing against us I don’t think you’d particularly enjoy seeing him line up against you either. That said, he’s clearly one of the weak links in our regular starting 11 and someone we should look to upgrade on in the next couple of windows if possible.

One of the worst players in the last 30 years? Blimey, I’m no Sissoko fan but I could name dozens far worse than him.

His job seems to be mainly to cover the right back and get in the oppositions way
He does that amicably.
But I do wish we could find somebody who can do that job and pass the football and receive it without looking like his boots are on the wrong feet. :cautious:

Probably Paulinho with his 0 effort. But I would rather peak michael brown in there than Sissoko doing the dual pivot with PEH.

I wouldn’t go that far. I really don’t like watching him, but he’s easily superior to almost every central midfielder we had between Popescu leaving and Carrick joining.
as someone mentioned seems to have lost a yard of pace so he now is struggling to even chase down the player.
That was me, I really think he had, but I think it’s more on the ball and in transition where acceleration is vital. I don’t think I’ve seen him have an issue chasing down.

Still find it odd that Moussa is appreciated by those in the game but not by many fans.

I'm going to defend Moussa regardless of general opinion,

Wanyama shooting accuracy 24% https://www.premierleague.com/players/4816/Victor-Wanyama/stats

Moussa 32% https://www.premierleague.com/players/4549/Moussa-Sissoko/stats
