He only played yesterday, his fitness levels seem a bit off at the moment so not surprised he rests. It will take him time to adjust to the tempo of our training sessions.

Yes, he’s not all that great defensively and he’s a bit off in the press.

Not slagging the guy off, but just calling it as I see it. Great thing is that those are areas that he should be able to work on and improve over time and in this system.

He’s a great player and I’m ecstatic that we have him. But let’s try to keep the hyperbole and expectations reasonable.
I agree with you but I don’t worry about things like that on this team. The players and manager will hold you accountable. I recall quite a few of our current players started the same way here.

He isn't a defensive midfielder. As long as he can guard space, track a run, time the odd tackle and press then he shouldn't really be required to do any more defending. He's your standard no. 8, not a 6. Lo Celso will be similar to him assuming that gets done, which is why I want us to buy a proper DM badly. Players can fill in there and do a job but Skipp appears to be our only non-crocked DM (wanyama) and he's 18. A proper DM would reduce the amount of chances that we concede too - it's one of the reasons why we were so defensively good with Victor in there in 16/17, and why we haven't been as good since his injury issues.

We've still got Dier too, providing fitness and form. I don't think it's as desperate at you're making out.

Thank fuck we signed Ndombele, as this is clearly going the same way as the previous two windows. The ITK went from positive, to non-committal, to negative in those windows too.

Significantly earlier last time though

That’s the concern, isn’t it. He’s an important acquisition but by mothering fuck is this starting to look depressingly familiar

I agree re Ndombele will profoundly change our game when he gets fitter to move the attack quicker
And we do need a good DM behind him.
Its possible that Sissoko could be that player.
He is tough and can place a pass when confident. By the way I think his tackles are cleaner than Wanyamas and he can go up at times with ND back for a rest

Did anyone really expect anything different?

To be fair we have signed a world class midfielder
plus lessons have been learned....
and it's Poch's fault we didn't sign anyone in previous windows
DId you know Betis keep changing the goalposts
We really tried
There is no need to sell in order to buy
Oops, although if Eriksen goes we can sign GLC, BF, RS etc etc
Our academy has sufficient resources

Oh shit Poch's off no one could have seen that coming guv...

Is there a three line summary of that?

Here's a couple quotes:

"Nonetheless, in Lo Celso, Ndombele, and Dele, Tottenham now have three of the best two way midfielders in the world, providing both great ball winning and great creativity all over the pitch, albeit in vastly different ways. Far from last year’s struggles to craft a functioning midfield of any sort, this year Pochettino may be faced with difficulties getting all of his great young midfielders on the pitch. Notably, the midfield Spurs have developed is ready for a five year stretch at peak age: Winks, Lo Celso, Ndombele, and Dele are all 23 and under."

"This season, Spurs will have much more solidity in midfield, and with it, will likely return to their suffocating pressing of years past. We should expect much more defensive activity high up the pitch, and that Pochettino will run out more midfield twos this season than last year, allowing Dele, Son, Kane, and Lucas/Eriksen/Lo Celso all on the pitch together with Ndombele and one of Dier or Winks paired with him. Perhaps we may see that Lo Celso/Ndombele pivot behind Dele, Lamela, Son, and Kane (assuming Eriksen leaves)."

Fascinating preview for me personally.

That's a really fascinating piece - it gives us a lot of optimism for the next few years if these players can develop. And hopefully he's spot on with the summary about the press. We sorely missed that last season!
