Player Watch - Tanguy Ndombele

Any idea what the shitty attitude was about in the first place? He seemed like a very physically capable player before joining us. Move to London, big wages, playing in the Prem, with a club who clearly valued him hugely, two top name managers to work under. I mean he had every reason to be up for it even if the team was really struggling.

Monday's release of All or Nothing includes a meeting with Levy and Ndombele (and a translator), plus Sissoko and Aurier discussing things with him. Just found it harder than he expected in terms of physicality and fitness, and didn't expect to have to work as hard as he has for his place. First season syndrome.

I'd be super stoked if we can get Tanguy working. If he puts in a shift, knuckles down, and gives Jose reason enough to select him, then he could well be the fulcrum of this side for the future. Like everyone else, I so want the words from TN to be more than that and see a marked improvement, however, I am realistic to also know that it could all very easily come down to another player that just couldn't adapt to life in the Prem. Lets hope and pray he turns it around and gives himself a chance to become one of the best in the game.

You really never how it is for a young footballer coming from another country (along with his previous experiences in his football career) and what looks like from what we've seen a player who looks very reserved and quiet.

We've seen minor glimpses (sadly) in a Spurs shirt to know the boy can really be a major difference in the middle of the pitch. We must bare in mind the Premier League is a complete different monster compared to the French league and the rest tbh. He definitely wasn't prepared for the pace and tenacity of the game here. But still we all know how talented he is and the player he can become. Me and my bro we normally debate about this whole bloody saga and he feels his not pulling his weight around and his attitude in the game and out is wrong. And tbh I can see that and agreed at times but if you look at it at a different perspective there's always that side you have to take into account aswell.

He obviously needs time to adjust in his new life in London esp knowing most (if not all) of his very close friends and family are in another country. It looks much more like a psychological battle his facing (along the way its integrating into his football career). On top of having poor advisors (judging by the rumours it seems they are happy to now see how TN continues here).

Niggling injuries, the inevitable communication breakdown as his English is very weak (im sure in time he will improve on this), Poch leaving, Jose in with a whole new philosophy, Covid lockdown period, etc the fella really has had a rough time and maybe he isnt as strong minded and independent we would think a footballer would be. Hopefully his mentality is now at the right place. I have faith in him especially knowing his got Sissoko and Aurier (until he might leave) and others beside him to help out.

Very curious to see how this all pans out but I really hope this is the season we really get to see Ndombele perform at a level we all know he can. Love the question Jose posed on him where if he can keep the commitment and desire. Because if he does it will absolutely be huge!

For me the most important part is for him get back to match sharpness and perform well in training, keeping on top of his fitness and thats when hopefully he and especially Jose can start to build that trust. Apologies for the essay :bookworm:

The ITK suggested that no one was willing to pay any more than £25m or so, and we weren't willing to sell him half price, so he needs to knuckle down. Everyone has agreed that's the best outcome for now.
So next season becomes an audition for him for other clubs. You’d hope that would motivate him to really grasp the opportunity

Really wanna see him come on at some point today, but if he doesn't, hopefully he keeps his head up and continues to train hard.

Think he'll definitely start mid-week.

There may be truth in this, and I have no idea how much. Possibly it is all true. But this is our club record signing, we needed more last season. We can't expect him to adapt completely, but we can expect him to put 100pc in at least - even if that isn't very effective. In my opinion, that didn't happen. We were so close to Champions League that a bit more effort from him could have got us it. But that didn't happen, and the club and us as fans have suffered. So no more excuses for Ndombele please. The ball is in his court. For me, he either does it or he leaves is utter disgrace.

It will be Winks/Holjberg double pivot imo. NDombele has a good chance of coming off the bench though as I can see the starting midfield being bereft of any creativity.

Nailed it!

I’m not a fan of TN, but when he came on his first 2 passes were forward... which was good to see... and better than anything Winks and PEH did all game.

Here’s hoping he gets a run of games...

Thought his direct line clearing passing was great and so needed when he came on. Then he went through that just derp filled spell where he couldn't stop giving the ball away before getting more settled but by then the team had largely quit or clearly didn't know what our tactic was other than "give it to Ndom and Son or try a hail mary diagonal". I don't think that performance changes Jose's mind he's a liability or the mind of those who think he just needs games.

the problem is that after 70 minutes and absolutely no creativity whatsoever he's put on as our sole creative outlet and the pressure is on him to salvage something from the game, it's ridiculous

Time to sink or swim with him. 15 minute cameos with players seemingly uninterested won't tell us anything about his actual ability to knit the midfield.

This team still feels like a mess to me.

What a shit start to the season.

He wasn't perfect but he offered some incisive passing from midfield, which is more than any of the other imposters had to offer. Needs to play.

He seemed out of sync with Bergwijn from the start, thought that was the key to scoring an equalizer. Everton was also begging Spurs to rotate it towards Sissoko (rightfully so)

That first ball to Kane felt so different to everything they've done up to that point.

Because it was. It was, from what my eyes could decipher, the first progressive pass played from our midfield all match. a low bar yes BUT he's clearly better than Sissoko, Winks, Hojbjerg et al.

Today was clear that without Lo Celso and Ndombele we have very little in central midfield. We need Ndombele when Lo Celso is out and vice versa. If we can get them both playing together as well (either in place of Moura or Alli who are both inconsistent) we could start playing again. It's very similar to missing Eriksen albeit a different area of the pitch but completely impacts the way we play without either of them. At least we have 2 players who could offer something in midfield but today was unfortunate that Lo Celso is injured and Ndombele not match fit enough. Hojbjerg and Winks are too similar in where they like to play, we need someone who can make those runs forward and progressive passes. We saw little glimpses of Ndombele looking for forward balls but we were very ragged by that point.
