Hugo MoM, Toby 2nd. Whoever voted for Winks is taking the piss.

We desperately need a leader on the pitch. Despite my previously supportive comments, PEH isn't the one - the way he dug out Reggie after his (PEH) mistake is a case in point.

Lloris 8 - would be higher as he had a good game but fails to come for crosses which is infuriating. Laporte is 5 yards out and he's stuck on his line again. Just come and catch the ball, happens all the time sick of seeing it.
Reguilón 4 - erratic
Dier 7 - pretty solid except for a horrible cross from De Bruyne, some good blocks, one of his better games
Alderweireld 8 - didn't do anything wrong
Aurier 2 - braindead foul (again) would've been more but yet again a defensive mistake has cost us
Winks 3 - no idea why he's back in the team. Dreadful
Hojbjerg 3 - just waves arms about didn't do much else
Lo Celso 4 - average
Lucas 7 - no idea why he went off was the only attacker causing any sort of problem even if it was on the half way line
Kane 4 - wasted a good counter attack and like the whole team was way too far back on the pitch
Son 2 - shocking performance did he complete a forward pass? Could only be crying at the end as he knew he had a stinker.

Bale 4 - done nothing
Sissoko 2 - why is he marking laporte when dier or toby were on him first half and doing fine. Useless
Dele 4 - only thing he done was give the ball away but not much time to do anything.

Mason 3 - very weird subs. Sissoko and Winks has never worked never will both shouldn't ever be on the pitch. Leaving Lamela and Ndombele on the bench was criminal.

ref 1 - how is a man born in Greater Manchester allowed to ref this game. Sick of refs in England being awful.

The thing that I found most irritating, was the insistence to play it from the back when city were clearly geared up to be better at stopping it, than we were playing it.

Numerous times, it was passed about, city pressured, led to a panic pass to the CM which floundered all game, only for city to win it back and off they went on attack. How it was 1-0 goes to show how well Toby Dier and Lloris played.

There was one occasion when we had a throw in near their area. It went all the way back to Lloris, then we gave it away in that fashion.

Infuriatingly pointless style of play. Literally.

The goal could have been easily prevented as we had a man on the line in the corner where it went

Toby and Lloris superb and the ones with the most credit from that match.

Mason showed he's not ready for this situation he's been put in...

Lloris totally outplayed his opposite number, quality. Toby and Moura not far behind both put in good performances.

Midfield collectively ineffective. Lo Celso had a good spell in second half and of the three the only one capable of finding a pass.

Son choose today to play one of his worst performances ever. Travesty that he stayed on and Moura came off.

Aurier was ok until he had a brain fart. This combined with Sissoko inability to get off the ground and head a ball cost us dearly. Why was Sissoko marking Laporte it has been clear as day he can’t head a ball.

Kane battled on scraps and Dier was solid.

Mason, tough ask but the subs were ridiculous and arguably killed off any chance we might have had.

People digging out Aurier. Reggie miles worse today. Been a shell of himself since coming back from injury

How does Ndombele & Lamela not get on the pitch

Unfuckingbelievable
Aurier with a typical brain fart cost us the goal so will always get more criticism than a nothing performance by reguilon

Lloris MotM.

Today was a weird day. We were owned in the first half yet Lucas was denied twice to go through and cause havoc yet only one of those was a yellow. On another day we a man up.

I thought as the have went on I felt a lot more comfortable that we were better organised and looked like it would take something special to beat us.

However, those subs, fcuk me, those subs. I'm speechless. Sissoko for GLC and Bale for Lucas. I thought he was involved in talent development so he would have an in-depth dossier on those players. Sissoko is never a replacement for GLC. You can't replace a ball player with sometime who can't control the ball. Lucas was playing a hell of a lot better than Son, so Son should have been replaced by Bale. Bale not bothering to move isn't Masons fault but Mason can't fall back into the sub Lucas tactic that Poch and Jose employed.

Lloris 8 MotM - dealt with pretty much everything and showed his leadership when he forced players to go up the pitch on goal kicks.

Toby and Aurier 7 - I thought they played well. If it wasn't for that free kick I would have given Aurier 8.

Lucas 7 - the only attacking threat we had.

Everyone else 5.

Sissoko and Bale 1 - they both let Mason down.

Mason 5 - scored him a 5 as he showed willingness to play defensive of needed so clearly he has more than one way to play and another good half time team talk. However, his in game management was awful. Those subs lost the game and those subs came on and contributed nothing. Dele on 83rd minute and Bergwijn 89th minute, like wtf. He needs to learn from this.

Lloris 8 - Very good
Serge 4 - Why foul Sterling, ridiculous. Unfortunately makes these decisions regularly and for that reason should be moved on
Toby 8 - Great blocks. Very composed
Eric 7 - Good game
PEH 5 - Unable to move the ball forward and squandered our best offensive move and then bizarrely blaming Reggie?
Winks 4 - Doesn't play forward passes except for a few floaty cross field passes that get intercepted. Unsure what he brings to the side?
Lo Celso 7 - I thought he played well. He was tenacious and was the 1st player who managed to play some neat forward passes to get us in the game. Crazy to sub him?
Lucas 7 - Played positively looking to break forward and was unlucky to be brought down a number of times when past the defender. Unsure why he was subbed?
Son 3 - Unsure I've seen him play so badly or with such little confidence. Should have been braver and taken people on. Definately should have been subbed
Kane 7 - Nothing was created for him, however thought he was v good in possession retaining and moving the ball on

Sissoko 3 - Why Why Why bring him on at all. If we are looking to win the match surely N'Dombele or Lamela come on ahead of him. Failed to jump for the goal which isn't the 1st time
Bale 5 - With the midfield behind him there was absolutely no service
Dele not enough time
Bergwijn not enough time

Mason 3 - Not brave enough. I think he killed our chances by giving us a Sissoko, PEH, Winks midfield when he had better options available.

Giving away a penalty you can argue costs you a goal, but not a free kick

Sorry - Missed Reggie
Reggie 5 - Silly booking when he dived in. Tried to get forward and shame PEH couldn't find him with a 5 yard pass in 2nd half

How did Aurier cost us a goal? He gave away a free kick that we didn’t defend properly

Sissoko wasn’t alert or strong enough v Leporte and PEH couldn’t manage to stay on the frigging post!!!!

Aurier 4
Toby 7.5
Dier 7

Moura 5.5
Son 3
Kane 3.5

Subs
Sissoko -4
Bale 3
Bergwijn N/A
Alli N/A

Lloris, Toby and Dier stepped up for 2 absolute shit full back performances. Aurier shows he is never going to eradicate stupid mistakes and Reggie was just awful.
Special mentions to Winks who managed to be anonynous and Sissoko who managed to jog, point and forget to jump for their goal. The man is a liability and should be consigned to the bin at the end of the season.

How the fuck is Toby not winning the MOTM poll? Honestly, what are you all watching?

Hugo had a decent game, one or two good saves, but he also didn't claim a header that went in from 3 yards out. That was one of the best CB performances we've had in the past decade, it was the culmination of a man truly pissed and frustrated to not have a trophy from his time at Spurs.

Well...we did. Hojbjerg. So no, it couldn't have. It's a header from 3 yards out, once you have that happen you're asking to concede. It was a stupid foul from Aurier, piss poor defending from Sissoko, and to a lesser extent that perennial weakness Hugo has with dealing w crosses near him.

I feel the negativity in the match thread as well as what's in the Ratings thread so far are abit overblow.
We lost to the beat team in the country by 1-0. Our form has been so bad we got Mourinho sacked about a week ago.
A defeat was an expected outcome. Need to put things into perspective.

Lloris and the entire backline did well. Toby was outstanding and deserved at least an 8; my MOTM.
Our defensive shape looked good throughout, and like @Bulletspur had said, Sterling did skin Aurier a few times but that's part and parcel of being up against a better player; but I still think he did well overall.

I think Mason actually did ok in this department; the defence is set up correctly, and the game-plan was obvious: essentially we park the bus aka Mourinho and hope that we can hurt them on the counter. This relied on keeping the score-line level, because the moment you are down by 1-0 you would have to 'come out'; and for this reason he stuck with more defensive-minded midfielders (Winks + Sissoko) over Ndombele. It made sense. Ndombele has been in bad form and if he loses the ball in midfield, it would be difficult to recover.

On the flip side of the coin, we offered essentially nothing going forward. Lucas was the only one who showed for the ball, as he always does. Son was awful, Kane was better but in the end we barely created anything.

However I think our impotency up front was to be expected; Mason couldn't be expected to improve us up front when Mourinho has failed over the entire season.

Move on from this.
I genuinely don't think Winks is any better than Ndombele defensively, though. Winks is bang average defensively and all he does is cover passing lanes. Can't be bothered to look up stats, but I bet Ndombele makes more defensive contributions than Winks, along with being a far better offensively. Sure, Ndombele has been dodgy recently, but even on a bad day he makes stuff happen. Winks never does.

If you're going to try and play out from the back you NEED to play Ndombele, or at the very least, Lo Celso, in the midfield 2. Those are the only midfielders we have that have any hope of beating the City press and without either of them on the pitch we deserved to be 3-0 down at half time. They smothered us and but for some last ditch defending and poor finishing they would've been out of sight.

The most frustrating thing of all was that, even after we miraculously survived the City onslaught, we still kept Winks on the pitch, took off Lo Celso and brought on bloody Sissoko of all people. I can see the very basic thinking behind it:

To make up for Bale's lack of tracking back I'll bring on Sissoko and have him play on the right to cover the channel.

Problem is, by taking off Lo Celso, he took away our one midfielder who could foot his foot on the ball and handed the initiative back to city. Bale barely got a touch as a result and the move completely played into City's hands.

I'm happy as anyone that Jose got sacked, but I still think we should've kept him for the final. He was shit, but I think we would've done better with him in charge today.

Gave it to Hugo as he kept us in it although Toby was in with a shout. In hindsight it might have been better if he hadn’t kept us in it for so long as maybe if we’d gone behind much of earlier we would have tried harder to make a game of it.
