Robbie Keane was last night forced out of Liverpool before completing an incredible return to Tottenham.
Keane, who only moved to Anfield for £20.3million in July, was determined to stay.
But boss Rafa Benitez bullied him into rejoining Spurs after warning he was prepared to let him rot in the reserves for the rest of the season. Republic of Ireland striker Keane, 28, even told Liverpool he only wanted to sign for Tottenham on loan until May.
But Benitez made it clear that the forward had no future on Merseyside while he was still manager.
The bitter breakdown left Keane with no choice and he returned to White Hart Lane for an initial £12m, rising to £15.5m.
Benitez is now set to sign a new four-year contract this week to stay at Anfield.
The Keane deal puts down a marker that he has won his battle with chief executive Rick Parry to be in charge of transfers. Keane now returns to Tottenham with former team-mates Jermain Defoe and Pascal Chimbonda, who have been re-signed by Harry Redknapp within a year of being sold.
Liverpool wanted Aaron Lennon as part of the deal, but finally agreed to sell Keane after the London club increased their offer.
Tottenham will have to pay extra in add-ons for appearances and success, and have agreed to match Keane's £65,000-a-week contract at Liverpool.
Redknapp said last night: "I'm thrilled and delighted that Robbie Keane is back at Tottenham.
"He can make all the difference for us. Robbie can be great for this club again."
