It was pretty clear that Manure only offered 30m plus yesterday. If you believe previous speculation they were offering somewhere between 20m and 25m prior to that. Now i am not defending Levy but if the options were to take 20m 1 month ago or 30m yesterday what would a responsible chairman do ? Maybe the answer is to take the 20m and have more time to bring in a replacement . The bottom line is we got the worst scenario- last day sale and no time to bring in a replacement.

My own view is that we should have done as Villa did with Barry and give a final date of 3 weeks before the deadline to come up with 28m or he stays .

definately not... we should have made it clear that we would only sell at £30m... Man U offered lower, trying to tempt us... but Levy held out to right to the end of the window and finally Man U paid up and we got Campbell on loan...

good work Levy!

Depends.

If you want to make a profit and sit mid table seeing yourself closer to relegation than UCL then NO

That's what the troll chose.

no - he should have got Pav in earlier - that's true - but that may have weakened ou r bargiaing position - Levy wasn't to know City would hit the jackpot and force MU to shell out £30m plus - it could have been quite tricky under normal circumstances with the replacement already bought and Berbs sulking to get that extra £10m - but c'est la vie etc

Levy is a better negotiator than me and I dare say most of us on here

No - this is starting to sound like a broken record

Christ am I the only one who thinks that we came out of the Berbatov deal with a victory. They were offering £20m and fairly publicly accusing us of asking for too much. We got them not just to £30 but nearly £31m and got them to chuck in a deal on a striker that they had an offer of £7m for.

Moral, financial and reputational victory if you ask me. Plus we have one of the more prominent stars of Euro 2008 as a replacement

No we shouldn't let Man U arrogantly believe they can get away with taking players for below a fee that had been set.

Good show Mr Levy, good show!

No "dare say" about it DC. As much as I cursed this transfer vocally in the Chat Room for a crazy 2 and half minutes last night - in the cold light of day, and taking into account the whole of the transfer window - he is one of the very best there is.

And we had Berbatov and Keane in the team when we posted back to back worst ever prem starts the past two seasons, and we were in the relegation Zone last season until Ramos took over with the sulkster and we picked up our first point of the season at Chelsea without him,go figure.

Good for him. He's still a crap football man. Levy would have fired Nicholson after the first game in 61.

My guess is he could've got something like £25m earlier if he hadn't talked about complaining to the league (which he hasn't done!).
I'm sure he sees it as a moral victory but we've no replacement & no chance of legal action so can't really see what he's achieved other than money in the bank, no doubt to be spent on 31st Jan 2009.
We all know Man U are bullies & Berbatov wouldn't rest until he joined them, hugely unfortunate & symptomatic of modern football but a reality. Personally I'd have done a deal earlier through gritted teeth & spent the money in plenty of time for the start of the season.

How angry would the more reactionary members on this site have been if we had sold him for £20m, having slapped a £30m tag on him, and bought in Milito or someone similar?
They would be screaming that we have no negotiating backbone, and listing attributes that Berbatov has that our replacement doesn't.

It seems clear that Ramos favours a 4-5-1/4-3-3, and we have the midfielders to play this system effectively, so having 2 quality strikers and a hungry young back-up is perfectly adequate.

It is probably as much to do with the 'ITKs' having raised all the more gullable fans hopes, and those same people are now berating levy and co for not delivering.

Well since the poll is so far overwhelmingly that Levy did the right thing why are so many complaining ? What would they have done in his situation ? Spent 30m on David Villa ( if we could have got him ) without knowing whether we would strike a deal on Berbatov ? Nice in football fantasy land but not in reality .Or sign Arshavin for 20m and play him just behind the striker(s) which is clearly Modric's best position ?

Personally I am in the minority as I would have peferred another striker which I am sure we could have got with 20m in the bank. But I fully understand the counter argument - it was a no- win situation for Levy.

Very. In fact, however Levy had handled it some people would have complained.

Absolutely not. How can anyone not be impressed that we made the biggest club in the world our bitch?

Yeah we've lost a great player but we were never ever going to see the best of him again because he's clearly a complete tosspot. I hope he does as well for them as Keano's doing for Liverpool.

When it became obvious Carrick was destined for Man Utd early on we bought in Zokora and this helped our negotiations when it came to selling Carrick.

We knew Berbatov was destined to leave as long as Man U put in an offer we found acceptable so I don't see why we couldn't have got someone in ready for when Berbatov left. Maybe we've just been trying unsuccessfully all summer to buy someone, life doesn't alwyss run smoothly. Happy Levy stuck to his guns and got the price he wanted. Torturous for us fans though.

You know all I've heard over the last 8 weeks is we don't have to sell to buy, on SSN this morning they said we are just over £7m in profit after the buying spree and the transfer buget given to Ramos at the begining has not even been touched (good work there) So my point is weather he took £20m or £30m is not important now but what is important now is why the fcuk did we not spend some of that money IT WAS THERE TO SPEND

Now while I think Levy has done well financially for the club he's fcuked up big time in the transfer window..........................UNLESS he has made some deals but must wait for Jan to finalize them, if come Jan we not getting a CF/S or a D/DM then I think its time to let Comolli and Levy go and us the fans need to be heard because without us where would they be.

So lets not jump the gun here and wait for Jan before we call for Levy & Comolli's heads

You forget Pavlyuchenko was the replacement. The problem was we did not get a Keane replacement.
