Totally disagree as podcasts are now overtaking these shows for viewer/listenership and a ton of the podcasts are loaded with journalists who know what they’re talking about (Honigstein, Horncastle, etc.). The fact is they’re already doing the punditry and are arguably already better at it.

In fact I believe your argument is why the format is slowly dying the way it is. It’s an old boys club that looks for “banter” who you can tell watch maybe one game a week. There’s nothing there and people are tuning out.

If I wanted to hear “he needs to do better” or “he needs to try harder” then I’ll listen to those old ex-pros.
That's fine mate, if you'd prefer to listen to someone who has literally zero experience of playing/managing/coaching at that level then knock yourself out.

There's clearly a place for both ex pros and journalists on these sorts of things. Usually they bring completely different perspectives.

Think of it this way. We wouldn't disregard what an historian wrote on the basis she hadn't lived through the times she was describing. We might even be inclined to trust her insight and expertise over a person who was much closer to the events but lacked the trained skills of a professional historian. At the same time we would still regard that person's first hand account as being extremely valuable. The two go together and bring different things.

100%. The problem with football panel shows in England is that balance between the "been there done that" ex-pro and the well-researched, well-spoken, media-trained journalist is non-existent. It's almost all of the former and none of the latter except for on the BT European show.

I know I'm probably in the minority but I like Clinton Morrison & he's a die hard Spurs fan

Their first four-man panel on Saturday will feature ex-Spurs and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood, former Stoke and West Brom boss Tony Pulis and former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison.

The trio will appear alongside long-time regular Paul Merson, with Jeff Stelling hosting the flagship live scores programme as usual.

Snooze Fest = no charisma.
So Sherwood takes the role of 'irritating and ridiculous comments' mantle from Thompson.

Pulis takes the 'bitter and dour' role from Nicholas.

Morrison takes the 'likeable and just there for the laugh' role of Le Tiss.

I know Pulis was recently in the PL but hes still a dinosaur, whereas Timmy is just arrogant and irritating.

Perhaps they tired to get more insightful or interesting guests but they all have their own stuff going on and are not interested?

We had Pulis as a guest last season and he was surprisingly eloquent and insightful. Sure he prefers dinosaur tactics but he was actually really good on TV and he made some analysis packages of the matches we had that day that were really interesting.

I'm far more skeptical of Dim.

I guess I've analysed him wrong then.

What was that for?

TV 2 Norway's Premier League shows, he was with us for a Saturday I think so the standard three matches, studio and analysis pre-match, half-time and post-match. He was far from the worst guest we've had (Gullit, by a mile).

To be fair The likes of Thompson and Nicholas have barely any more idea what it's like to be a modern player than the journos do. Not just the matches but the day to day reality of being a player in 2020 and a player in the 80s is completely different. That's presumably why they offered so little actual insight other than the usual clichés

Nice! Do you work on the production?

Yeah, I can imagine Gullit was, comes across very poorly sometimes, very arrogant he seems.

Yes, I direct the productions. I'm lead director for our Europa League shows and also do maybe 8-10 PL weekends in a season plus some shows of Norway's domestic version of Soccer Saturday. We also have almost all international cycling and a lot of winter sports in our portfolio so I don't work solely with football 24/7 but maybe 20/7

Not sure why you think I'm for the likes of Nicholas and Thompson being used as pundits...they're dreadful and the reason I haven't watched Soccer Saturday for god knows how long. They haven't played professionally for decades, the game has moved on a lot since they last played...they should've been moved on a long time ago.

Im just glad that literally every broadcaster agrees with me and not you....funny that.
I don’t find it that funny. Viewership is going down and people are losing their jobs because of stubbornness. Kind of sad really.

So did anyone watch it? I turned over from the Palace game for about five minutes, seemed the same old format just with Tony Pullis on it.
