I don't think england's problems are at u-21 level. They are 10-15 years below that. The u-21 boss can only really prepare the players to try and play like the full team. Given how the full team plays it's not really that hard.

I don't think this is a bad idea, the U21 coach needs knowledge of who is coming up through the system etc. and how the players are developing, but what has Southgate done to just get plonked in the top job? What experience does he have in working with youth teams or developing young players? None at all really.

What they need is a technical director overseeing all age groups, and making sure they all play in a shape that replicates the club sides so everyone is familiar with it (so a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1). Then as for the coaches, I think that they should move up the ladder and that every time the U21 manager leaves for pastures new they all get promoted up one level. This always ensures that you get experienced youth coaches who can handle the development stages and get the best out of the players, and hopefully with a real knowledge of the talent that is out there and pick the right players.

What we need is someone who understands the modern game, perhaps has actually played / managed through it - Middlesbrough doesn't count.

Perhaps someone who other managers and players would actually respect and is not afraid to take some chances and has some creative ideas of their own - a fresh approach.

Southgate is clearly a 'yes man' and the ol' dinosaurs at the FA are too busy playing their political games, attending free events with - the obligatory - prawn sandwiches, and discovering new ways to generate revenue rather than truly addressing the grass-roots issue of our game.

Perhaps he is and I'm being somewhat harsh. However, if the FA are constantly ' poking his bottom with their wangs ' I don't know how much independent decision-making he's going to be allowed to make or if he'll be permitted to make drastic changes if he should feel they are necessary.
