What the actual fuck?

Have you even seen the incident? It was 100% a foul on Hojbjerg. Joelinton ran at him and dived headlong into him.

Seriously, why are you so desperate to insist that the Newcastle goal was fully justified at every step in the build up when it was clearly anything but? It's seriously perverse. You're supposed to be a Spurs fan. I've seen Arsenal and Chelsea fans commenting about all the reasons why the penalty shouldn't have been a penalty and the free kick shouldn't have been a free kick (though enjoying it nevertheless). But you're determined to dig your feet in and, against all the evidence, insist otherwise.

Fucking bizarre.

he did mention somewhere that Aubameyang was the best striker in the PL or to that effect

I've said it before with regards to VAR but I still maintain that there should only be one replay of each available angle, if you need multiple replays then it takes up far too much time and cannot be considered "clear and obvious".

Having seen that view, actually I am not now 50/50.
After their player passes the ball, Hjojbjerg make a conscious step to his right into the path of where their player is running.
That is a foul, he intentionally impedes the run
There isn’t a run. There is a headlong dive from several metres away. If Hojbjerg isn’t there Joelinton lands flat on his face. 1). Hojbjerg is under no obligation to get out of the way and 2). The referee doesn’t even see it. He’s facing the other way and just guesses

But certain things are not decided by clear and obvious, that is only for subjective decisions.

Offsides, whether an offence occurred inside or outside the penalty box and now handballs are not subjective decisions, but matter of fact, they either are, or they are not.

Is anyone keeping a list of the key decisions for/against us since VAR was introduced? Would be good to see if it really does even out over the course of a season...

@erhieyid Apologies... as I’m a very shitty mood today. But is there a reason me writing about VAR in a VAR thread is considered by your esteemed judgement to be Spam? By what measure should i censor myself so as not to run afoul of what you consider to be spam?
oh, and for the record... while we are on topic... fuck VAR. may it burn in hell for all eternity.
i need a drink....

Apologies @jeremystorey I seem to have caught Hercules fat finger syndrome. Will remove accordingly

I wonder if our players tucked their arms inside their tops would that make them safe from this daft hand ball rule?

Well last season we actually gained the most points of any team in the league due to VAR decisions.
There will be websites keeping a "Without VAR" League table, but this early in the season pointless looking at them.

Possibly...or just a massive contrarian who likes to play devil's advocate.

Not the first time this has been said either, I feel he's a pretty good poster and insightful most of the time but let's himself down with things like this, there was that Aubameyang 'undoubtedly' being the best striker in the league which was clearly designed to wind people up so maybe you're right :D

MOTD2 did a good piece on the new laws just now.

In first 3 weeks last season there was something like 6 penalties awarded, none for handball.
This season in 4 games less so far there have been 20 penalties, 6 for handball.

Last season we had 19 penalties given for handball across league. La Liga and Serie A both had about 50 (and they were more used to the laws than we are). I reckon will will end up with north of 60 (so average 3 per team for and against) this season purely for handball.

You're allowed to should to shoulder somebody, if Hojbjerg weight had shifted towards the attacker then I could understand but he objectively shifts his weight onto his left and he's turning towards where the ball went. The only even of him even remotely blocking off their number 9 is him anticipating the silly fuck swan diving into him.
That is a common misconception. If two players are running side by side there will be 'shoulder to shoulder' contact. That is allowed; it is why there is an allowance for it in the rules. What isn't allowed is for one player to use his shoulder to barge another one out of the way.

He didn't do that

Until they sort this out it kinda puts me off football. I’m old school and played professionally when I was younger. I can’t stand seeing handballs given for this sort of thing. We could debate all day long about how the technology is being used and should be used. But this sort of thing that’s currently happening needs to get taken back out the game. It’s frankly embarrassing and spoils the game. How you can jump for a header with yer arms out or in or whatever and be penalised for it striking it unintentionally is mind boggling.

So if this has been brought in to align with La Liga, Serie A etc, was there a big uproar elsewhere in those leagues from managers and fans last season when this new handball rule was brought in?

Taken from Sky sports:

The new handball rule for defenders
A foul will be awarded the ball hits a player who has made themselves "unnaturally bigger" with their arm. IFAB determine that a hand or arm above shoulder height is rarely a “natural position”. There can be exceptions, such as when a player is falling.Leeway can also be given with ricocheted handballs, when it comes off a nearby player or if the player cannot see the ball.

So I'm dying to fucking know the justification for why the referee was amazing and didn't use that part of the rule.
