Are we the finished article? No. We can still improve, like we did by signing Wanyama when the same 'we can't improve our first team' lines were being trotted out.

Of course we can improve but with significant investment.

Do you honestly believe there's players out there we can get for a moderate price who would be an instant first teamer, if so then who?

Barkley is a huge gamble. High risk high reward though

If he could play well next to either wanyama or dembele at home against defensive teams then it will work

Don't think Barkley is a huge gamble considering the price tag (1 year contract left) and his performance (4 goals 9 assists). I think he is a safe option instead (PL proven). I tend to think he is rather a medium risk medium reward.

It's football though isn't it? City will have been taking to Walker's agent, United to Dier's. They'll all say it's just hypotheticals, but we all know what goes on. No-one even bothers talking to a club over a fee until they've talked to agent about whether the player wants to come and the financials.
Exactly, i remember people losing their shit last year at Levy, because it was reported that we never even put in a bid for Batshuyi.
Absolutely no point in bidding if you can't get near his wage demands.

Hopefully the club is Ajax...a lot of players who would be suitable for us...

Matthijs de Ligt - 17 years old, CB, very highly rated and would be a very good understudy to Toby and Jan, get some cup minutes and him, CCV and Dier could man our defence for years

Jairo Reidwald - CB/CDM with the ability to play LB, think a left footed Dier...could be another good option in terms of long term Verts replacement! Him and de Ligt both have senior caps for Holland

Kasper Dolberg - 19 Years Old, Scored 21 goals and has 8 assists this season...very Kane-esque...obviously there is the Janssen question, but I think there could be something in a Janssen/Dolberg exchange, as they know he is proven in that league and could buffer them losing a high prospect.

Justin Kluivert - Son of Patrick, 18 years old, 10 goals and 16 assists across multiple leagues and age groups this season, Striker/Winger like his dad, great looking Prospect...

Or more finished articles...

Joel Veltman - 1 year left on his deal, very experienced by now and a solid CB, can fill in at RB too, not a world beater, but a shrewd-Wimmerlike signing...

Davy Klaasen - Can sit in deep or play more advanced, good mover of the ball and all round midfielder, 19 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances this year from midfield, linked with Everton as RB replacement, would be a good rotational midfield option combining European experience, leadership and youth at 24 years old!

Hakim Ziyech - Also 24, 12 goals and 20 Assists In 44 apps this year, has manned that midfield with Klassen, but tends to go forward a little more, good mobile player, kind of Mahrez-like, but being Morrocan, has the AFCON burden makes it a little less likely...

Thinking there is a chance that Janssen could be a makeweight in a deal, as mentioned, he is tried and tested in the Eredivise, and could be good for Ajax in terms of going forward and pushing for the title next year.

Also Michel Vorm could be another I could see going there, there goalkeeper Onana, someone I mentioned here before, looks like he could be off to Spain this summer, so having an experienced Dutch International could be the exact type of signing they would like, a good leader amongst youth and perhaps he would be interested In returning home and playing out his last few years in his homeland and win some trophies, we look set with Lopez going forward and have McGee as backup there as well, along with Whitman, De Bie and co.

We seem to have a decent relationship with Ajax and hope Eriksen, Toby and Verts could chat to some of the players and big us up enough...hope I'm not just clutching straws, but would love to see de Ligt and Dolberg, and even Kluivert come in!!

Note: I do actually watch Ajax quite a lot on Sky, as I quite enjoy the Eredivise, them and PSV are always a good watch...I've mentioned the players I have because I think they are great talents who would excell at our club...(For those who think I'm FIFA-fanboying)

Part of me wants Barkley just because he's supposedly our number 1 target and it would be nice to actually sign our main target for once.

Koeman's said that if Barkley doesn't make a decision in the next week he'll be sold.

I reckon we've tapped him up, which isn't coo'

How does that actually work though? It's up to Barkley if he's sold or not isn't it? If he wants to see out his contract he can refuse to move.

Financially he's low risk. Even if he doesn't fit in here we'll make our money back - because he's a proven PL performer and home grown for the 25 man squad rule.

Davinson Sanchez?

Also a really really good CB However apparently Barcelona and Inter and people have his sights on him, don't see him joining as a rotational option as I think Poch would keep the Dier-Toby-Jan partnership, figured de Ligt being 17 would be more suited to a sporadic, developmental role...but yes, he has been outstanding this year, especially in front of Onana, who I think is a fantastic Goalkeeper, would prefer him to Lopez tbh..

Do you think Ajax can beat United if they get past Lyon tonight?

These would be the first two I'd be looking at.
Reidwald is very much a left sided Dier, so would provide a Wimmer replacement, also able to cover Wanyama, and would give us a long term Vertonghen replacement. Between Carter-Vickers, Dier and Reidwald, we'd be set for the future.
Dolberg very much reminds me of Kane. Kane-lite if you like, similar build and gait. Physical enough to lead the line, but technical enough to drop deep too. Again, longer term view, ideal.

Our problem is there is a disparity between the strength of our first eleven and our transfer resources. We basically have a champions league quality first 11 but europa league transfer resources. So we can't go out and buy ready made champs league quality players to improve our first 11. That doesn't mean we can't improve it but our route of buying hidden gems with high potential means we will always end up with Janssen's - who sometimes could make an immediate impact but more times than not will need time to develop before they are ready to challenge for a first team spot

You need to appreciate that we don't have one unchangeable 'first XI' and that it will sometimes change depending on the opposition. For some games our best XI will be three at the back, others it will be 4-2-3-1. Against some teams we will benefit from starting Winks ahead of the more defensively minded but technically less accomplished Wanyama. We may find that next season if we are not able to change the dimensions of the Wembley pitch our best XI will be improved with a Zaha-type forward with pace who will beat defenders more often than Alli or Lamela. If we sign another forward, someone like Dolberg there may be occasions when Pochettino might favour playing two forwards, as was mooted a lot when Janssen was signed.

That transfer approach can be dressed up as strengthening the bench or whatever, but Pochettino has shown enough tactical flexibility to suggest that with more quality options across the pitch we wouldn't be constrained to having one, definitive 'first XI'.

Ajax play a pressing system as well, so anyone we signed from them would be more accustomed to it and take less transitioning to get used to Pochettino's system than players signed from other clubs would.
