Stokes is a great captain, but is seems all he is is a captain now. It's as if England are playing with 10 men and one of them can't spin it because he hasn't bowled a red ball in over a year?
Also, if you're gonna ask for a flat, nothing pitch, surely 3 80-85mph bowlers of similar ilk isn't the way to go?
This will take something miraculous for Australia not to win and for all the exciting Bazzball stuff, England have snatched defeat from a win. I don't mind the declaration on the 1st day, I get that. But the batting in the 2nd innings was just unacceptable. Too many gave their wickets away playing poor shots. Robinson knuckled down and scored 30 odd at a decent strike rate. Wouldn't have hurt to leave Australia needing 300+ even if they only had one day to win. I get this we are here to entertain stuff, but I'd rather this was 0-0 or 1-0 England rather than a defeat. I don't find losing entertaining, we'll have Ange's Spurs for that.
yea it's tricky alright with Stokes on the playing side. you're either fit to bowl or you're not. when he's not in as an all-rounder, the side is totally unbalanced. I think it was a mistake to bring back Ali, and Wood should have played, but as we've seen with the Foakes/Bairstow saga, these are all tough decisions.
i'm not totally in agreement that we've snatched defeat from a win. you can never tell how it would have panned out with Australia needing 50 more than they do now. they are looking supremely comfortable at the moment. in any case, i make it that our bowling and fielding has let us down this test, rather than early declarations and 'throwing' wickets away. We should have had a bigger first innings lead with the dropped catches and missed stumpings etc.
nobody complained much when the results went our way playing this type of cricket.
