Our issue remains an inability to score goals against the top teams: we have scored 2 goals in our last 9 games against Chelsea, City, Liverpool and Arsenal. Yet all of our business this window has focused on value signings at the back, with Stambouli, a defensive midfielder, our possible only addition on the final day of the window.

What happens if Lamela or Chadli get hurt? Lennon and Townsend have scored 2 goals (a deflection and an accident cross that went into the goal) in their last 55+ league games. If either of them start for any period of time in Pochettino's system, then we will not finish any higher than 6th, and if they are to be used as starters in Europa, then we won't get anywhere near the final 8, as they've shown themselves to be equally inept against inferior European competition, too.

I hope Pochettino hasn't come into this job with any hint of naiveté as to what Levy expects. Missing out on targets isn't going to impact where Levy thinks this team should finish. He will accept a 6th or 7th place finish this year, but how can Pochettino improve on that in year 2 if he will potentially have to deal with more players moving and the inevitable difficulty in bringing in players he really rates to replace them? It's an exceptionally difficult job.
